[F@H] SMP Client Question

I have a quad core machine that is very sporadic at trying to keep all 4 cores folding with 4 instances of FAH. (Mostly upload and download issues)

Would I be better off to convert this machine to run the SMP client?

Any pitfalls?

Thanks.

Linux or Windoze?

The Linux SMP client is fairly mature, and generates a high number of points per day. Altho the classic client is even more mature.

Lots of people use the Windoze SMP client, but it's got issues, reading the various postings on the F@H forums.

If you are having connectivity issues with the classic client, you may still have them with SMP. The down side with a SMP client is if you have no work, the machine is entirely idle, instead of just one core.

The up side, I think you will accomplish a higher number of points.

SMP will keep the cores busy, and Linux will get about double the PPD of windows.

Not sure what your up/down issues are but SMP units generate some really large result file to upload. My last 3 units sent

[00:02:13] (Read 93863486 bytes from disk)
[10:25:48] (Read 48710502 bytes from disk)
[18:18:20] (Read 25917508 bytes from disk)

If I can interpret that to be 94 and 48 and 26 meg uploads

Windows uses different cores, but probably have large results also.

The up/down issue is just reliable connectivity. When it works, it works great. I just dislike having cores idle.
My point of view is DL one big unit that all cores can share rather than 4 cores all trying to take a turn......

Thanks for all the ideas so far.

I have been running the console SMP client on several windows-based machines. Earlier versions of the client did have troubles at first, but they have been operating flawlessly lately. I've been using the deino MPI version. There is also a dropin 6.23 version under the others on the download page. You should copy that in after doing the other installation steps.

Be sure to read the instructions carefully. It isn't quite as easy as other versions where you just run the executable and go.

Good luck!

I have three SMP clients running on Windows quad core boxen for awhile now. One machine is a little tricky since it is a dual CPU box, both XEON quadcores. The only issue there is shutdown and I have discovered I need to shut Windows (happens to be Windows Server) down rather than to try to shut down the clients. So far I have lost no work that way.

The other client I am running on a Windows XP box, Intel Q6600 only slightly overclocked to 3.0GHz. All three clients are stable.

You do have to remember that the SMP clients are beta. Stable now does not mean stable tomorrow. It's a marathon, not a sprint. We're doing a good thing here, even when there are pitfalls.

I installed the 6.22 beta2 for MPICH (32-bit) clients and then dropped the newer executable in place of the older one, created the shortcut for that.

I echo Anthony's words of wisdom. Be careful to follow the instructions exactly if you try this.

Thanks all.

I have the 4 clients all running with the "- oneunit" flag, so I can get the regular FAH closed out in a graceful way.

Then I'll think about it again...

Then I'll load the SMP.

More news as it happens....
