[HSI] Charter's New Caps Policy

Just read the news about Charter implementing caps. As a graphic designer, I am not happy to see this--sending one file to a commercial printer can be 1-3 GB, depending on the size of the job )I only send 2 or 3 of these a month). I also enjoy viewing tv shows I've missed, streaming internet radio (how many gigs is that?) and I maintain an active forum. I also design websites. And no, I dont have a business connection because I am just one designer and I dont need (and cannot afford) the level of service that a business account gives you.

If Charter is going to count every bit that passes through my connection, they best get rid of some of the spam, too. They are shooting themselves in the foot--in this economy, if things are too expensive, people will just do without. If you cant watch stuff on the net, why have it at all?

IMO Charter just lost there edge this was the only thing that made them better than Uverse, Comcast and TW. Now if I get a Uvese flyer in the mail that's cheaper than Charter I'm gone. Since they are both capping I might as well go with the cheaper one. Charter needs to realize ATT, Comcast, and TW are not in debt. Charter needs to be careful here before they find themselves losing customers.

This company is ran by idiots. I beg that FIOS or U-Verse or TWC or Comcast gets in here so I can finally kick Charger to the curb.

The only reason i ever liked charter was because of their no caps. Now i might switch over to another isp because 100GB cap is way too low. They should make it around 500-600GB to be reasonable. 100GB is way too dam low. I hate caps anyways, i might go dsl if its like this.

Let's see here.

A company who charges me for speeds which I don't get.
They are in debt to the point where everyone thinks they are going out of business soon. They want to put in download caps now.

Let's see how much I can pass this cap once this is in effect. Maybe just maybe they will be out of business before I get my bill, or maybe I just don't use them for anything anymore and just not pay them. How much is that rate for going over the cap again? Oh and sorry I ran over my leased modem with a truck. What? What is my modem doing out there on the road?

Let me place the order for dsl now just in case.

How does one keep track of bandwidth consumed? Do we just take their word for it? Seriously, I have no idea how much bandwidth I use.

well they SHOULD provide a meter. ther are some you can download. du meter is decent. You get a 30 day free trial so that sould give you an idea of how much you use. Just make sure you download it on all of your computer. If you use an XBOX or soemthing I'm not sure how you'd get it to tell how much bandwidth that uses. I assume this cap is Dl/UL combined so take that into account.

No, if he needs the *services* a business account offers he should be running a business connection. Otherwise he's paying for stuff he'll never use (as opposed to paying for something you never get).

Unfortunately, it looks like "higher/no caps" may become a "business class" service.

Sadly future broadband will be like cellular is now. We'll pay for basic plans and tracked usage or have to pay out the nose for unilimited service. At the moment I have Elite DSL simply because they offered me cash back to switch and for the higher upload speed vs the 5Mbit tier. I guess now when ATT implements caps as well I'll be forced to a 16-20Mbit tier in order to have the higher cap. As it stands I will be using just over 120GB/mo with the streaming radio, Netflix, PS3, and work from home.

For what it's worth, I configured PRTG last night with ease and was able to track usage and perform reporting on my router across each port. Using a 4 port router and being a little creative with the VLANs at home will allow me to track usage based on groups (kids' PC, media machines etc). An alternative to this would be a new router running DD-WRT or Tomato which will also track bandwidth usage as a whole.

I did a little digging and found the original ATT cap thread »More Specifics On AT&T's Cap Plans. It looks like I'll be switching back to Charter for sure when the ATT caps hit. This is going to be bad all the way around. I don't mean to get OT here but I thought it would be nice to compare.

I'm interested to know if they plan on applying this to CBN accounts also. We are still in our 30 day trial period and want to be able to cancel in time if they are going to do this.

I have a lot of users on IMAP e-mail from home or remote devices and sending a lot of PDF files back and forth. I'm not interested in worrying about hitting any download limits.
