I think what the OP was figuring was that 10mbit internet can download 1250kbyte/sec, or 4.5 gigs in 1 hour. 4.5 gigs a day for 30 days is 135gb, so downloading at full speed for just 1 hour a day (every day) and no other activity at all would exceed the 100gb cap.
I don't have 16mbit so I don't know what speed it actually gets. Assuming 16 gets bumped up to 20 here in the near future, and assuming 20 will get double the speed of 10, 9 gigabytes an hour, then 1 hour per day of 20mbit downloading will get you up to 270gb in 30 days... | |

I suspect if you asked the people here if they rather have 16 Mbps and a 250 GB cap or 1.6 Mbps connection with no cap they'd take the 16 Mbps tier even though the 1.6 mbps tier allows you to use double the bandwidth. | |

They should offer a 1meg speed tier for 20 a month if this is what they are doing because, not everyone wants to pay 50 plus a month for speed that can not be used more then one hour a day when it cost them .50 to .75 cents a GIG. | |

the fact is no one is going to use their bandwidth at the max 24/7. That's fact. Now Charter could have gone the other way and lower the speeds and got rid of the caps. Rather have a 2 Mbps/2 Mbps connection with no caps? Didn't think so. Even if you were actually on 24/7 you're not constantly downloading. If I spend 30 minutes here posting on this message board I'm not downloading and uploading that entire 30 minutes and I'm certainly not doing it at the full 10 Mbps. In fact 99% of that time no bandwidth is being used( for all intents and purposes ).
Even in a house of 4 people the connection isn't being used 24/7. There are times when no one is one it. But let's say for shits and giggles that the connection is used 18 hours out of the day. Not even when all 4 people are on the connection it's not constantly being maxed out. Most times it's not doing anything at all, but let's say 50% of the time something going on and the connection is being used at an average of 70% of max. Now I'm being VERY VERY generous. Even in this extreme case this family would use 830 GB of bandwidth. | |
