Upload speed much faster than download speeds on Fios

I have run an anti-virus. The machine is clean. When the tech tested the connection on his laptop the speed was fine.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? Any help is much appreciated.

I am seeing the exact same problem today in VA Beach.

Interesting on your end that the tech tested w/his laptop and it was fine. I've tried 3 or 4 different machines w/my connection and all have the same problem.

Is that the only machine on your network? What OS? If it's a windows OS, try booting in safe mode with networking and see if you still get slow speeds. That might isolate the possibility that something is downloading behind the scenes.

Give safe mode with networking a shot...Or hell, a live Linux cd like knoppix.

Sometimes my speed reaches the low 600's. and the upload goes between 4100- and 4400. Very strange how are speeds are so low, but almost indentical.

I ran "Safemode with networking". The download and upload speed were almost the same as the speed in the first post.

I'm wondering if the tech went to a flash speedtest that he/she had been at before and it had cached the the file.

I have mixed results with Speedtest.net depending on which browser I use. But usually the pings are the tell-tale signs that match the test results. I get 5ms with Firefox and IE, but 200ms or more with Opera.

This test always provides accurate results with it's socket test.

See if that test gives you better results. There is something wrong, but it might help you isolate where the problem resides.

Wired or wireless? What kind of router (VZ supplied or other)? My guess would be the router has some funk in it. Do a reset holding down the reset button on the back for a few seconds then let it reboot and try again.

I had an issue last week where my down speed was 10 (out of 20) and up was 200kbps. After checking all my equipment I called VZ and asked them to break my ip lease. It renewed with a new one and all was well.

I don't know if this matters, but the ping speed is 57ms

Have you called VZ support yet? they ca't troubleshoot it if they don't know it's broke.

Also can you do some traceroutes? and try pinging your gateway IP while browsing and then post back

Yes. Reboot the router, try this optimizer etc. didn't get anywhere. They said they can send someone out to test the line. I'm still deciding if it is worth it, since the tech was getting good speeds on his laptop.

Are you using Ethernet or Moca? if ethernet try connecting directly to the ONT and test your speeds again.

I would always go for the tech visit. If you complain enough they can escalate to the next tier support. Also it's hard to isolate a larger issue without multiple customers reporting the trouble so every call or visit helps.

Could still be a defective ONT or Router. See if they can replace it them on a visit.

Also did you get the traceroutes?

Something very odd has happened. The download speed is still showing 600-800 kbps, but the speed is much faster. For example, previously I would have to let streaming video buffer and load for 10 mintues before I could watch it. Now the video loads almost immediately. Same thing with large images, almost instant loading. The speed is showing one thing, but the performance seems to be much faster.

Try a different speed test. Could be the results page is cached or something, too, showing an old result.

Did you try this speed test site?

Monkeyman84, have you by any chance powered down your ONT yet? That may just fix your speed problems. To do this, you will have to go to where your ONT's battery backup unit was installed. Now unplug the ac cord, and open up the BBU. Look inside and you should see a battery with two leads, one of which has a black or green pull-tab. Unplug that cable by softly pulling it back away from the casing. Let the ONT stay without power for about 10-15 minutes. Plug everything back, in reverse and let things come back up.

If you have any set-top-boxes, including your PC, router, or switches, now would be the time to reboot everything. Once you have a dial-tone again, you should be able to test your speed @ the following site: myspeed.visualware.com

Note your speeds, and if it does not work, you can try again, but extend the total time off to 30 minutes now. If that still does not fix things the problem may be your router, ONT, or central offices PON card or local gateway. There are so many variables that I can not list them all.

Hope some of that helps.
