Hi, I have a hub with about 10 pcs connected to it .It has been working well for the last 10 months and all my PC's are on LINUX platform. Since yesterday i am facing a problem.
After the hub is switched on ,the PCs are staying connected for about 2-3 minutes and then the connectivity is lost , and when i restart the hub the same thing happens(i.e, the PCs stay connected for 2-3 mins and then gets disconnected).
Even I changed the HUB ,the problem is still there. Can any one suggest me a solution for this . I dont know wether it is the problem of the hub or the OS(LINUX Redhat 5). |

I'm not clear on what's going on. It could be a whole bunch of things. Is the uplink plugged into anything else? |

| reply to Sri Sounds like possibly the HUB.
Have you tried connecting 1 at a time and then work your way up to 10? Sounds like there might be too many collisions on the HUB causing it to crap out.
P.S.
I would also recommend getting a Switch over a Hub, but that's me. |

What *CAN* happen, however, is that you get uncontrolled collisions/congestion. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell |

| reply to Sri Where did you find a HUB in 2008/9?
Unless you have a switch and you keep saying Hub by mistake, you don't want a hub.
Why it worked for 10 months but is failing now I have no idea. Sounds like whatever the switch/hub is connected to is having the problem, not the switch/hub itself since you already tried swapping it out.
It's not the OS. I'm assuming that's set to DHCP (dynamic IP)
Maybe you mean a router?
We need a lot more info here. Where are you getting IP addresses? What it the connection to the internet? Who knows - could be anything. -- My place : »www.schettino.us |

| Unless you have a switch and you keep saying Hub by mistake, you don't want a hub. That reminds me of the time that I replaced a 100 mb/s switch with a 10 mb/s hub. With the hub, I could put the network adapter of one system into promiscuous mode, and observe the packets that were going to another system.
I did revert back to the switch as soon as I had solved the network problem I was investigating. Hubs do have their uses. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.5 |

| My first couple of semesters at college, the residence hall ethernet connections were on a non-switched network. You could literally run a sniffer and the ENTIRE building's network traffic was visible. So ~200+ POP3 passwords in the clear...scary stuff. In the middle of the 2nd semester, they updated the network to use switches, thankfully. -- He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have. -Socrates |
