2 edits | [Phone] Curious things about Shaw Digital Phone
UPDATE: I decided to rename this thread because of another interesting thing I just found out about. See my post below...
I ordered Shaw Digital Phone with three lines configured for Multi-Line Hunting. For those of you who don't know, when someone calls me, it'll ring the first line. If that's busy, it'll ring the second and then the third lines, and if all three are busy, the call will go to voicemail.
I've already started the number port, but was just told today by a Shaw rep that they are not able to display our primary phone number on the outgoing Caller ID for lines 2 and 3 - I'll be assigned some random phone number for each of those.
This is unfortunately a deal-breaker for me - I tried this before with a different provider but seeing a new number on Caller ID made my customers suspicious. (I know Caller ID can be spoofed, but they don't.)
Does anyone know why they can't do outgoing Caller ID properly? I would imagine this to be a trivial task. I've emailed their rep but haven't heard back yet.

have this similar setup with Telus.
i was told the same thing that outgoing call display will not show the primary number.
however, it shouldn't be a "RANDOM" number, it should be a number that gets assigned to lines 2 and 3.
I am not sure why it can't be done as it should be simple for them to "spoof" the outgoing call display on the two lines to your primary number. |

| reply to Mango Re: [Phone] Curious things about Shaw Digital Phone
I just now learned something else that made me think, "Why the heck do they do it that way!?"
I wanted to set up Call Forward Busy on our Shaw line so I logged into their management website. But all that was there was Call Forward, not Call Forward Busy or No Answer. So I called their tech support.
Here's the curious thing. Call Forward Busy disables Voicemail. If you have Call Forward Busy and nobody picks up the phone when it rings, it'll just keep ringing forever (unless you've activate Call Forward No Answer.) We don't have voicemail on this line, so it wasn't a problem for us. But I cannot come up with a logical reason why they would set up this feature as such. |

| reply to Mango Here's another one.
As I mentioned, we don't use Shaw's voicemail, so I didn't notice this. I heard from someone who does, and he says when you listen to your voicemail, they play it back in reverse order.
said by Gord :
Message 1 - "Oh yeah, can you pick up some beer?"
Beer? Beer for what?
Message 2 - "Hey Gord, you can come over to our place around 8:00 if you want to hang out and watch the game."
Ohhh, okay, I'm invited over to watch the game at 8:00, and I should bring beer. Okay. |

1 edit | reply to Mango Ok. This one REALLY has me stumped.
I get to the office today and set up call forwarding busy from our Shaw line to our Telus line. I use the Shaw line to call itself, and the Telus line starts ringing. Great! But then...it quits ringing and doesn't go to my Telus voicemail. Instead, I get:
"Welcome to Telus messaging service. Using a touch tone phone, please enter the number of the person you'd like to leave a message for. Or, press the # key to enter your own mailbox number."
"Weird." I think. "Maybe I deleted my greeting by mistake." So I call the Telus line directly, no call forwarding. I get my voicemail.
So to summarize, when I forward a Shaw phone to a Telus phone, the Telus phone rings, but does not go to voicemail. When I call the Telus phone directly, it DOES go to voicemail.
I have no idea whether this is a Shaw issue or a Telus issue. I called Telus and the repair guy said he would transfer me to the sales department. The call dropped while I was on hold.
EDIT: I emailed Telus and here is their response: "This is a common issue when forwarding a number to another number with voicemail. To fix this you will need to contact our Client Care Department at 310 2255 to have them had 'Last Number Call Forwarded' to your phone line."
They say this will take 24 hours; I'll give it another try tomorrow and see what happens.

But then...it quits ringing and doesn't go to my Telus voicemail. "Last number call forwarded" did not solve the problem, so I spoke to a CSR who opened a trouble ticket with a repair agent who was able to solve the issue. No word on what the issue actually was; the repair agent called while I was at lunch and ironically told my colleague he had no phone number for me to call him back at. |
