Thank you all for your comments. We are excited by the possibilities this brings to our community. We put together a very conservative business plan and should easily be able to sustain our pricing. Of course as programming costs go up, our prices will go up, and so will the competition. One thing not mentioned is the fact that we are also giving 100MBS peer to peer, for FREE. And, if this initiative doesn't live up to the expectations, my neck is on the chopping block. I think it is worth the minimal risk. And, by the way, this is not backed by the government, so taxpayers are not at risk. These are revenue bonds backed by our utilities system, and while there is some risk it is actually very low. Thanks again,
Joey Durel Lafayette City-Parish President |

| Awesome to see people behind the project here!
Now, can you come to my town and do the same thing? lol
Seriously though, I'm sure a lot of ISP people are wondering what type of infrastructure you guys are using.
Best of luck to y'all! Hope you can make AT&T and Cox compete by putting fiber in the ground! Though they can't math your prices... |

Competition? You guys blow the big ISPs completely away.
Too bad the big ISPs won't follow your example. I can only hope other municipalities do. -- AT&T + Comcast Your world. Destroyed. Throttle and put a cap on it. It's Comcastic! |

I am actually curious not trying to troll. A fiber network may be expensive to build but it is actually cheaper to run than a copper network. The cost of maintenance is lower because you don't have to worry about all of those copper lines that need conditioning.
Also, if you want to increase the bandwidth the network can support, all you need to do is upgrade the equipment at both ends of the fiber link. Increasing bandwidth through copper is much more expensive as you would have to upgrade/replace most if not all of the equipment that moves the signals between both ends of the link - that's much more work to do to add capacity. And on top of all of that, you need to add the cost of the electricity to maintain the signals moving through copper.
Head to head a fiber network vs a copper network, fiber will win every time. It will only get cheaper to build these fiber networks as time goes on. |

| reply to Lafayette Have you documented how your system was built? It would be awesome to have a design template that other municipalities could use to roll out their own networks. Where I live the city was smart enough to run conduit pretty much everywhere so FTTH could be done without tearing up the streets much but AT&T just isn't interested. |
