From Wikipedia: A firewall is an integrated collection of security measures designed to prevent unauthorized electronic access to a networked computer system. It is also a device or set of devices configured to permit, deny, encrypt, decrypt, or proxy all computer traffic between different security domains based upon a set of rules and other criteria.
A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.
If you vote for Other, please do specify what you use and any links to said program.
***NOTE - There are 2 listings for Doorstop X and MAC Firewall, with links leading to different web pages for the same type of product. This listing is intentional for those wanting to research that product more. Further, it is also intentional as one may not not know of the 2 different sites for this Firewall***
The list below has been link verified and corrected as of 2/5/2009.
So with the above in mind, it is my pleasure to bring to you this years 2009 Firewall Poll.
Thank you for your participation in this poll.
Please refrain from "My firewall can beat up your firewall" type comments. They are not helpful nor do they accurately reflect the high calibre of people who frequent this forum. -- DIRECTOR OF THE CRUNCHENSTEIN ASSOCIATION AND HOST OF CRUNCHENSTEIN #2 |

| reply to TransitMan Using the free Jetico v1 »www.jetico.com/jpfirewall.htm Wanted a simple double-sided firewall with none of the extra bells and whistles. Looked to me like the trend was to pack programs with so much stuff (I didn't want my firewall monitoring my AV definitions). All I wanted beyond the one that came with windows, was to also see and control what wanted to get out. -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. Bleah |

| reply to TransitMan Shorewall is a front-end for iptables, if we want to get all technically correct. I voted for shorewall (which I use) but I would have voted for iptables (which actually is the firewall) had I seen it first |
