[Tweak Test] Very slow download, upload fine

1. »/tweakr/block:···a=normal

2. »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ Chicago server, 4511kbps down, 720kbps up (these are actually very good speeds for me, usually I get 1000kbps or less on download during peak use times)

3. »/linequality/4···/2486784

4. Turbo Cable through Time Warner Roadrunner, modem is Scientific Atlanta WebSTAR DPC2100R2

5. N/A

6. N/A

7. WinXP OS

8. I'm on turbo so I should be getting 10,000-15,000kbps download. My upload speeds are within advertised and seem to be unaffected by anything.

9. N/A

10. I have a D-Link WBR-2310 Rangebooster G router. My computer is hardlined to the router by ethernet, my sister's computer is on wireless. Both of us have the same issues. Bypassing the router and plugging directly into the modem changes nothing.

11. N/A

Download DrTcp

Set Tcp Receive Window to 192720

Set Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, Black Hole Detection to Default.

Leave Max Duplicate Acks and TTL Blank

Save/Exit DrTcp

Reboot

Rerun the Tweak Test

Run Two Speed Tests from the two DIFFERENT cities nearest to you that are listed here: Speakeasy POPs

Also, test here »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512

Note your transfer rate after about 30 seconds. Then cancel the download.

Post the URL for the New Tweak Test. For the TWO Speakeasy Tests, Copy and Paste the speed results from those tests and note the speed from the FTP download test.

• Go to »192.168.100.1. The username is admin and the password is w2402

Post your signal levels.

• Your ping times on the LQT are all over the map. This could be an issue.

• Call your ISP and ask them to reprovision your MODEM with a new config flash. This will see if your MODEM is set to the correct tier level service.

Going to »192.168.100.1/ only takes me to Sci Atlanta's specs page for my modem. There is no provided login and the "signal" tab is disabled.

My ping times are indeed all over the map. I get unbelievably bad latency during peak times and random latency spikes up and down my lines all through the day.

That link will take you to a screenshot I took of a continuous tracert I ran for a couple hours today. It's a mess.

I called Time Warner and had them reprovision my modem. New Speakeasy test:
Chicago server, Download Speed: 1141 kbps (142.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 587 kbps (73.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
NYC server, Download Speed: 1087 kbps (135.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 670 kbps (83.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Since both you and your sister have the same issues, it could be a bad MODEM. If not it is an ISP issue. You are going to have RR see if they can find the problem.

Get them back on the phone and ask for a ping test to the MODEM to check for packet loss. Ask them for a signal check. Also, send them the plot that shows the latency issue.

I had a Time Warner tech out to my apartment last night (my third tech visit to date). This visit was so they could put a booster on my line, as per the recommendation of the lady at Time Warner who pinged my lines Sunday night. She said I had unbelievable latency and packet loss and a very weak signal; she'd not seen anything this bad in a while and said the only thing she could suggest was to have a booster put on my line. The tech guy who came out yesterday checked my signals and my lines and said everything looked fine. I said yes, everything usually looks fine until about 7PM and then it all starts going to hell.

The tech's response was well if nothing bad is happening when he's here, then he can't troubleshoot anything. He did NOT put a booster on my line, and instead removed some type of connector from the back of my modem and said "This is a pad. This will mess with your signal." I showed him the readout I posted here and said this is much more typical of what I see during the evening, and he gave me his supervisor's direct number and his personal code, and said that if my internet starts doing that again, to call the supervisor and give him his code and see if he's out, and he'll come over and troubleshoot for me while the signal is bad.

On the up-side, I had the DSL guy come out to my place yesterday too and run tests on my phone lines to determine if I get a good enough signal for DSL, and the answer was affirmative. So, at least I have a plan B if this cable internet thing can't get solved.

So a happy ending to my problem seems to be in place. I decided to switch to DSL after 3 months of cable issues. My internet has been clear and steady now for 2 weeks and I've had zero issues with packet loss, latency, or download speeds. Of course, I have also taken the time to run tweak test on my DSL and optimize my computer. Works like a charm. Thank you for your assistance Irish, it's much appreciated!

Too bad TW did not fix the issue. If you have any issues with your DSL line, come on back.

Good luck.
