modem or have already paid for one...

it would take 3-5 days too if you don't have one already
it takes only 5 min to get connected with cable
DSL 5-7 days at minimum average 10 days lol
dsl is shoddy at hooking you up, it probably is run by people who are extremely patient and want you to wait a long time

good luck with your charter or cox cable internet
hopefully it will be faster and easier to troubleshoot for you
