So what's on CNN and Fox today about the stimulus package?

The union is going to strike and walk away from the table while workers are being let go by the thousands weekly?

That's exactly what I thought too. Real smart. Unions need to go the way of the Dodo.

No one will actually strike. Their bargaining position stinks. AT&T will ultimately win this one. Especially since their "final offer" isn't that bad.

I suspect that you have it correct on this one.

Workers are worth only what it costs to replace them...not a penny more. I know it sucks for many to hear this simple reality, but that is how it is.

So what's the cost of service quality going down the toilet?

You're assuming that AT&T Mobility customers are currently getting "quality service" and if they were it would change if they used non-CWA workers. Some would argue that service could improve if they used non-CWA workers.

It's not a matter of CWA or not. It's a matter of training. I'm not sure the level of technical expertise needed for their jobs but technical jobs aren't easily swapped without major problems coming down the pipe.

They could have the same employment experience requirement but my understanding is that the CWA contract placed limits on scheduling and who can do what which can lead to a decreased level of service.

In what world??
Inflation is on the horizon and anyone who locks themselves into a 2% increase is a fool.

Plus I love the veiled threats in the letter sent out by AT&T...

Regardless, this is just normal back and forth in a contract negotiation...

Considering many non-union workers these days are either a) not getting raises (or actually getting pay cuts) or b) losing their jobs, 2% is a pretty good offer.

I would tend to agree with Dogfather.

Companies in general only value performance... and even then, they prefer to have performance at the lowest cost - union or not.
As an individual - you can work hard and move up the ranks, and on to a possible better career. The limit is 'you'.

As a union member, you're tied in by seniority as a general rule of thumb. The limit is 'the union'.

then maybe the non-union employees should consider being protected under a collective bargaining agreement

People gripe when CEO's are making millions in bonuses while their company is tanking.

People gripe when mothers are not working and are on welfare.

People gripe when workers are trying to hold down a 40 hour/week job for decent pay.

What do the gripers want? Everyone to make the same? I guess Obama for president is starting to make sense.

Unions in ATT only extend, at least in the Mobility side, to the RSC's once you hit management they disappear and then ATT really sticks it to you. The culture between the two is not friendly and rarely smooth. Not to mention your ability to move up inside of that massive company is extremely rare within the first 5-7 years and many times never happens as the good old boy system plays it self out due to the older managers who have sat at their job for the last 10+ years.

Why should someone who works hard and someone who barely works at all be paid the same and get the same raises, just because they both happen to be in the same union?

I agree but you would think ATT would get smart and look at their turn over rates in certain areas, like call centers and sales positions and see that paying a few more bucks on the top will save them MILLIONS in training costs. They have failed to realize this and continue to hit the bottom of all performance reviews when it comes to customer service.

If they took more of Tmobile approach to work environments and pay they might actually have a service that is worth anything.

I think what is really getting people mad is that ATT just put the new commission structure in place and people are seeing 50-60 % cut in their take. So ATT is making more and more off sales yet never returning that back to the people who made it. The union caved when those commission structure rules were to be ratified and let ATT dictate the rules. I think the CWA just wants to get a return on what they did for ATT. Basically they let ATT take a massive chunk out of sales staff pay, many of my past co workers are now extremely mad at the idea that ATT mobility side made record profits yet continue to cut their wages, hoping that they could at least get ATT to play nice and give them the same contract now. Looks like it didn't work and now people are getting screwed and ATT is laughing all the way to the bank.

I continue to laugh at people who say, "why are you striking now are you an idiot don't you know the economy is in the crapper aren't you glad just to have a job?" To that I laugh and it shows me the real character of people and the real reason why we haven't had any revolutions in 200+ years. People think just because times are tough you should back down and bend over and do everything they want. No one values their respect or dignity anymore they can be bought off in a heart beat. Yes I understand we should appreciate our jobs but we should also fight for a piece of the pie we helped a corporation earn. With out the people on the front lines the CEO's and hire ups couldn't line their pockets.

As Tyler Durden in Fight club said
quote:
Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.
