[Line Problem] my internet connection keeps dropping

for the past couple of days, my internet connection drops once or twice a day. resetting my modem and router seems to help. is there any way i can stop this from happening? i have a zyxel p-6600-r modem in bridge mode with a netgear wgr614v6 wireless router.

what happens is that the ethernet light on my modem goes out and my wireless router freezes up. is it time to get a new router?

Remove the Router temporarily and use only the ZyXEL Router/Modem setup to handle the connection. It will need to be reset and then configured for PPPoE.

Do you still have the problem? If no, then that means it is your »Netgear Router that needs help and any questions about it would need to be asked in the »Netgear Forum as that is the hardware support forum that knows about »Netgear products.

DNS does not make any LEDs go out, so no, changing the DNS would not fix the Ethernet LED going dark. It won't hurt anything and you may notice faster lookups, but it has no effect on the status of the LEDs on the Modem or the Router.

this only seems to happen at night. it has been very cold and rainy here. could that affect my router?

Routers work in Alaska with no problems, so I doubt you are having temperature or moisture issues unless the Router is exposed outside in the elements.

Now age of the device and repeated on/off cycles do place strain on all electrical devices, solder joints, ports etc., connections can become brittle, or crack under stain then go open making the LED go out along with the connection.

When the Ethernet LED goes out, that means that the physical connection is no longer being sensed at the low level. It is the same as unplugging the cable.

so do you think it is a good time to replace the router?

It could be a bad connector or bent pins on the WAN Port or a bad Ethernet cable or a loose socket or even a conflicting setting such as MAC Cloning being enabled/setup that is not needed or used with Earthlink DSL and could possibly make a problem. It may just need a reset and a Firmware update.

So any questions about your Router would really need to be asked in the Netgear Forum as that is the hardware support forum that knows about Netgear products.

i think i am just going to get a new one. some of the newer routers are pretty nice looking. i can pick up one cheap online or at circuit city's liquidation sales.

You better double check, Circuit City isn't liquidating anything. They have already been bought out by a Liquidator that went in and every price was raised, then they take the so called discount off the higher than normal price making you think you are getting a bargain when it really isn't.

Hey Circuit City, Where are all the Bargains?

Circuit City Liquidation Sale Price Switch-Can You Beat It or Will It Beat You?
»hdguru.com/how-to-beat-circuit-c···ing/314/
"Circuit City’s posted “current” price in a “closeout” store is not the same as Circuit City really charges (at its own website) for the same product. It is tagged significantly higher with five out of five TVs surveyed!"

Plus, I'd really hate to hear you bought a new Router and it did not fix your problem because you didn't take the time to diagnose the issue and you find out later that it ended up to be a bad Ethernet cable, or something like a misconfiguration addition or omission carried over to the new Router.

Do you mean why do things stop working/go bad?

Why do car batteries fail? Why do light bulbs in the house burn out? Why do headlights on a car burn out?

They just do. Anything man-made is not going to work forever.
