Looking for some info on the Houston area..

Hi all,

I am just trying to do some pre-planning before deciding on whether or not to do a phone interview for a new job. Trying to get some inside info on the Houston area as this is where the job will be located. Was down in Beaumont after the hurricane this past year, but that was the closest I got.

I have done IT work in the past and have an MIS degree but I also have a love of firefighting. I will never make the money in firefighting like I can in IT so I am having a really hard time coming to a decision.

I would be moving from FL and I have already seen that the housing market in Houston seems to be flooded and the prices are a LOT cheaper. I would have to, of course, make enough money to cover two mortgage payments as there is no way in hell I am going to be able to sell my house in FL anytime soon.

So, throw all the info you can at me. BTW - IM me is you have any info, good or bad, about Hostgator as an employer. I don't want to get into it here as that is the company I am looking to interview with.

Can you be more specific on the "Houston Area"
Houston is a large regional area and has both good and bad like any major city.

So do you have an area you are thinking about?

I see their office is near the Loop on the Northwest freeway. Goo time to be house hunting and the office location makes lots of areas available. Houston is a sprawling city with real city traffic. No real zoning laws so things are jumbled all over the place. You would likely end up living in proximity to any services you would want. City population is fairly diverse and most people appear to be here for a career/job. Standard of living is good, housing and other things are not priced to badly. There are areas of the city you may want to steer away from but all cities are like that.

Hard to generalize about things here without knowing more about you. Do you want to live in the city/burbs or rural, all are basically available. What are your hobbies/activities outside of work. Most things can be accommodated. You will be used to the weather coming from Fl. It is a bit of a drive to other cities although not too bad. Texas is huge and unless you travel east you will see long stretches of it.

Anything specific yo are looking for?

"Rope", also you may want to look at these sites, the local news & other info,(ie housing, apts, ect) in the area, since your company is localated in the N.W. area.

»abclocal.go.com/ktrk/index
(local ABC bews channel)

(local NBC)

(local paper)

AVOID anything along or listed on "SHERWOOD LANE" as the local police,(friends) say this area is known as drug alley

also remember when moving to Texas
you HAVE TO FO /LEARN 2 THINGS

1,HOW TO wear & walk in "POINTED toed" boots,
to kill the roach's in the corners
2,How to chew tobacci,& spit

If you have a love of firefighting, you might look at some of the smaller towns outside Houston city limits. Some fire departments are all volunteer, and are always looking for help, plus you could commute.
