That's probably helping it. When I had my unit, it was in a space about that same size, though my shelf was closed on the back. I'm sure that had a lot to do with the high heat I experienced. -- :: my trivial ramblings ::
If you look on the back or at least on mine, there are 2 usb slots so you could even run 2 fans if you wanted to. They are very inexpensive and if you get one like mine, you'll get a cool blue glow from behind the unit.
