Fairpoint stone-age over?
I called fairpoint Monday, and for the first time in about a month, I got somebody who actually had access to my account, and up here in Laconia, where I've been stuck with 3 for years, and now the 7 mbps service is now available!! I ordered it right away, but they said it'd take around 48 hours to go through.
I'm not sure what that means, I imagine there's just a button to push on my acount, but alas, nobody has pressed that button for me yet. Here I am 51 hours later. I'm literally on the edge of my chair. AHHH!
Bad news is that my 3/768 is only upgrading to 7/768. Why they don't think I need any upload doesn't make sense. I use the upload for web development and for uploading music, videos and pictures to my websites. Why???
What were you quoted for a price?

Welcome to BBR.
That is because maximum speed of ADSL us 8 Mbps toward customer and 1 Mbps up. Twisted pair phone cable has limited bandwidth. ADSL spec is asymmetric on the assumption for most residential customers download is more important then upload.
The price is $49/month + tax, and is on their site.
TSchmidt- that must be a limitation of fairpoint, GWI in Maine is offering up to 20mbps on DSL phone lines.
said by FredFredrick:ADSL2 and ADSL2+ (second generation ADSL spec) offer higher download speed but only on very short circuits. Verizon and FairPoint have not marketed ADSL2 capabilities. Being distant limited only a relatively small numbers of customers qualify creating a marketing nightmare. They already get enough complaints about folks not able to get 3000/768 due to distance. I went to the GWI web site but it is pretty light on details.

»www.aware.com/dsl/dslstandards.htm has several interesting White Papers about ADSL if you are interested in the gory details.
FairPoint's website says $39.99 per month with a 12-month contract for speeds up to 7 Mbps, which is the same as Verizon seems to be charging. For a month-to-month contract the price is $47.99 per month. I would definitely sign up if it were available here.
It seems I spoke too soon. Although I have upgraded, and apparently been charged for the upgrade, I have yet to receive my increased service.
I have contacted Fairpoint just about 13 times now. Each time, they tell me they're backed up and the order went through, but the system hasn't updated yet.
The last guy I talked to said it will probably happen some time next month, and gave me a follow up email address that doesn't work.
Hold times are apx 45 minutes each time I call, and each guy says something completely different. And not one of them has told me the truth yet.
This is frustrating. I ordered this 2 weeks ago!
