Re: [TWC] Roll out date for the Samsung H3090

Western Digital DVR Expander works with the H3090

I'm in NYC and just got the SMT-H3090 (160GB) through Time Warner Cable. After recording 7 movies and a couple of half hour shows, the hard drive was already 90% full. I connected the WD 1TB Expander (eSATA) and followed the installation instructions. First reboot did not seem to take. So I unplugged everything and started again. I then followed the onscreen intructions and waited for everything to finish (NOTE: The 3090 reboots twice during reformat/installation). The entire procedure took about half an hour. The DVR turned itself off when reformatting was complete. I turned the box back on and noted that the hard drive was now 10% full.

Word of advice: Do not turn off the DVR during the installation procedure, even if you think nothing is happening. Just follow the instructions (both printed and onscreen) and you'll be fine.

Charlotte, NC has released a few 320 GB 3090's but those are rare. TWC CNY is getting the 3090 with the 320 GB HDD or the 3270. TWC San Diego, Desert Cities, and possibly the Cisco/SA SoCal areas are getting the 3270 HD-DVR with a 320 GB HDD.

Are the files that saved to the wd 1tb expander playable files if you connect it to your computer. I'm more interested if they can be transferred to a computer hard drive or used independently from the the 3090.

No you can't transfer or playback any files. It uses a proprietary FS and they're encrypted. It's also tied to that unit. They do that to prevent you from doing that.

The 3270 is still in testing as of now in San Diego. I still think it will come out later this year. Like I said the 320 GB 3090's are a rare breed. Charlotte, NC deployed a few of them then switched to the 160 GB version. For some reason the management wanted to save a few bucks and ordered the 160 GB version. Except our division has good management that realizes that 160 GB is just not enough. I've lived with a 160 GB 8300HDC running ODN but would appreciate the extra storage of the 3270.

The 23rd street location is no longer offering the 8300 boxes. Only the SMT-H3090 if you want a DVR.

Is channel 199 and 51 better quality on the 3090 boxes , since they suck on the boxes now for MSG 2 and mSG + 2?

The thing is that there is some weird bug that prevents you from using a larger than 160 GB drive.

It's the software that allows for Manual recording. Navigator doesn't support manual recording. That could be added in a future update.

So are you guys saying that you can't hit hte record button on the remote ot start recording say in the middile of a show, and that you have to start recording from within navigator, even with the 8300? Because I can.

You can press the record button and that will allow for a partial recording but not a full manual recording. Unless you press record at the start of the show.

Does it have to be an expander? Can it work with regular hard drives?
