Re: [TWC] Roll out date for the Samsung H3090

"of course hob. employees of TW like u NEVER EVER have problems...ever!!"

No we do have the same issues as others, we don't get "special boxes" or have perfect coax coming into our residences. Boxes do go wrong but as I said before the symptoms that the OP is describing sound like a signal issue not a box issue.

What is your diagnosis?

Personally I hope TW sticks with Scientific Atlanta hardware. The upcoming Cisco 8500HD DVR series look promising. And now that Cisco owns SA, I see a bright future in terms of networking DVRs.

I have never had any issues with the SA 8300, 8300HD or 8300HDC. Hell of a lot more reliable then the POS DVRs (basically glorified VCRs) I had with Dish Network, and every bit as reliable and rock solid as the DirecTiVos I had with DirecTV, and the picture doesn't go black and white every time I change the channel.

Strange. I have 2 8300 HDC boxes for just over a year and have had none of the issues you appear to have.

I would suspect you have some form of signal issues that are causing your issues...I doubt its the boxes.

hob
I second that. I have never had any problems here with my boxes either. I had the 8300HD, then went with the 8300HDC (no reason, just I wanted the upgrade), and I never experienced problems with the box. When I decided to downgrade my DVR and get an additional digital box for my house, the 2 4250HDC's that I have don't have problems either. I did have an SDV related issue when they rolled it out, but it was on their end, and was fixed in a day or two. Definitely signal issues, not box issues. Especially if you have to keep returning your box and seem to be getting the same problem.

Actually I don't think so. Our division (TWC San Diego) is already testing Samsung boxes. The OCAP software will run much better on the SMT-H3090 than the HDC boxes due to the advanced architecture. Cisco has an even better DVR the 8600 series. That one rivals the Samsung in performance. Samsung does have more memory and CPU which is nice. The SMT-H3090 does offer networked DVR if TWC orders it. TWC is a member of MoCA and Samsung is their OCAP development partner. TWC has been deploying Samsung SMT-H3050 boxes which are run of the mill HD non DVR's.

It also depends on the Software. There are areas like NY which are still on SARA software. Navigator has been deployed in Passport areas like San Diego. SARA areas have yet to see Navigator. SARA does pretty much what Navigator does so why change over to Navigator. TWC developed Navigator in house though it's been a rough road. San Diego has the latest version of both ODN and MDN. MDN is the non OCrAP version for non HDC boxes. Passport divisions even got Pioneer, and Pace boxes. The new versions of Navigator are much better and have improved. I hope TWC continues to make Navigator just as good, if not better than Passport which was one of the best Digital Cable guides ever created imo.

The Pioneer boxes do suck though. Mainly 'cause their so old. The only good part was Passport. Then again I had a Pioneer BD-V1100 which was our first digital cable box. Running Navigator TWC's in house software was terrible. We then got an 8300HDC and I got the 3250HD. The 3250HD was our first HD box. We got it when we bought our 40" Samsung HDTV. The Pioneer HD box which I never got was even worse. It would stretch all 4:3 480i content. Even the Passport guide was stretched.

Not all TWC divisions use SARA. There are those ex Passport divisions that are now running Navigator. There are still some TWC areas still running Passport but they are using outdated versions. No idea when those will go Navigator. NYC has deployed the OCAP/tru2way version of Navigator but not the MDN version which works on the non HDC/Samsung boxes.

Just heard that the Samsung SMT-H3090 will have a 320 GB HDD . Now you can record more HD. Up to 40 hours of HD. SD viewers will appreciate up to 180 hours of SD. These babys have MPEG-4 and all the good network DVR features. They only have a digital tuner so your division will need to have Digital simulcasting enabled for the analog station. Most TWC divisions have digital simulcasting. Looks like TWC is going to Samsung and no more Cisco. TWC has used Pioneer equipment so it's ok not to choose Cisco. The Pioneer equipment were also SA compatible. The Passport software that they used to make also worked on SA boxes.

Too bad this dvr doesn't have firewire.

Edit: nevermind, saw firewire in the pdf

Yes it does have Firewire. The spec sheets said it supports IEEE 1394 which is clearly firewire.

The Samsung can also be ordered with an analog/digital tuner like the 8300HDC. However, you can only get it with a 160GB HDD in that config. If you want a 320 GB HDD you can only get it with a digital tuner. The digital tuner would be equivalent the 8240HDC. The 8240HDC is the same old 8300HDC but without the analog tuner. Our division has deployed them as well. Still waiting for the SMT-H3090 to come to our division. Then it will be much better since it's made to work with OCAP not a hack job like the 8300/8240HDC's.

So it looks like the HDC's use Sparc CPU's which can support JAVA. If TWC optimizes ODN a bit more it might be usable. Still the Samsungs are more powerful simply because they have better specs. More RAM and a better CPU spec wise will make them run OC(r)AP much better. Hopefully TWC will order the all digital 320 GB version since there is a lot of good HD programming out there. 20 hours of HD is ok but it's nice to have more. 40 hours of HD is good but storage is king. The more storage space a DVR has the better.

A good document that shows the 8300HDC's architecture.

This summer is when TWC NYC will deploy the SMT-H3090. Hope they order the 320 GB all digital version. Maybe our division will launch them. I really don't want to bother the president of our division on this issue. The only box that can rival this one is the Cisco 86xx series. That box is nice but the Samsung has a sexier look :P. Besides TWC has a development contract from them. I even have a Presentation that showed a SMT-H3090 prototype. The specs were much worst but they've improved a lot of course. The prototype isn't as good looking. I bet a lot of people will want the Samsung HD-DVR. Even SD only users will want it just for more SD recording space. There are SD users who use the HD DVR just because of more recording space. Then again our division only has HD-DVR's which is nice.

Looks like TWC is going to order the Samsung with the 320 GB HDD. Their website says up to 35 hours of HD so that means they've ordered the all digital 320 GB version. I hope TWC's OCAP software gets better. It's getting there but it has it's issues. The 35 hours of HD is at 19 MBps when you factor in the trick play buffering. This DVR should come out this summer in NYC markets but others might launch it in the second half of this year.

TWC might go motorola. TWC is going to deploy a multiroom DVR but you'll need to have a MoCA equipped HD-DVR and moca STB's. That means you must swap all your boxes to HD boxes that have MoCA. I think TWC will order the DCX3432 with MoCA. The 32 in 3432 refers to the HDD size. That means it will have a 320 GB HDD. The Samsung HD-DVR also supports MoCA as an option. However TWC would have to use Motorola non DVR since Samsung doesn't have a MoCA enabled HD-STB yet.

All you Cisco fanboys won't be getting that 8500 series or the 8600 series. The 8600 is the only Cisco DVR that can rival the Samsung DVR in spec sheets. The only disadvantage of the Samsung is that it has an 860 MHz tuner. The Motorola DCX and the new Cisco boxes support 1 GHz. The DCX has no analog tuners so thats nice. Don't expect TWC to deploy the DCX any time soon. The Samsung might deploy in some markets later this year. The DCX might be deployed this year if a division is testing them.

I expect Dallas to test and use the DCX series because are market is TWC's largest motorola "only" market they own.

I have wanted this box since they announced it in 2008.

they look better than the samsung boxes.

plus motorola has a nice look and feel to it. The DCH series looks okay. Im glad TWC got it right with motorola this time.

We are all motorla gear.

Also Comcast is already testing the DCX-3400 in reading PA.

The DCX3432-M will likely be for Moto divisions. The Cisco/SA divisions running Navigator will likely get the Samsung SMT-H3090. However TWC will equip it with MoCA and a 320 GB HDD. The 320 GB version has all digital tuners. Samsung even had a model called the SMT-H3092 which was a SMT-H3090 with MoCA. Now it's just the SMT-H3090 and it would be a nice upgrade from an 8300HDC running OCAP.

SMT-H3090 has been deployed in Charlotte, NC. It has a 320 GB HDD and most likely MoCA.

If you live in the Charlotte, NC area or Kansas City, MO you can now get this HD-DVR. It has a 320 GB HDD, MoCA, and an ethernet port. eSATA may or may not work if you are using one on a 8300/8240 box. It does have Firewire, and all the other inputs but no RF modulator. The front says Home network. The guide is 16:9 but it's just regular 4:3 ODN stretched to 16:9. It's nice if you want a guide that fills the whole screen. The Home networking features aren't enabled but a future ODN update will fix that. Hope this helps.

Thats not my decision. Ask Visuelz about it. In the San Diego HDTV forum an employee said the Samsung box had bugs. Also the HDC boxes are POS'. If you get a good one they are fine. There is a reason why they are so bad. When Cisco bought out Scientific Atlanta the QC went down hill. They make them so quickly that they don't have time to test them. TWC would get a ton of them with issues. Lots of people would return them.

TWC is also testing Motorola DVR's as well. TWC San Diego/Desert Cities is also testing the Motorola DCX. Infact TWC NYC could get Motorola boxes instead of Samsung. The SMT-H3090 doesn't support MoCA but it does have hidden Home Networking features via ethernet. The SMT-H3090 can support MoCA if TWC orders them with it.
