Please Post any issues when recording with a DVR. Example Given, when recording Oprah and set the series to record New Only you are still receiving repeats. Example Posts should contain the below information. Thank you to everyone who has assisted gathering examples. Please feel free to post any questions or contact me if needed.
What show? What time? What channel? Was this recorded on a DVR? Which box are you using? This is important. Is the box a Motorola or Scientific Atlanta? Is this intermittent? Was this a live event? Any additional info you may feel useful.
Thank you.

ak @teradyne.com | Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC HD (channel 807)
I would like to record only the new ones that come at 11:35pm. But it also records a repeat at around 3:30am. the repeat is not a repeat of the one shown few hours ago but is a few months old.
The box I am using is Motorola and this is not intermittent.
If I set the recording to keep only up to one episode, in the morning I am left with only the old episode, not the new one. |

1 edit | reply to CCGeorge i have found that if the guide info does not say NEW, the dvr will treat it as a new airing. it happens with many shows i record: psych, closer, nip/tuck, damages (usa, tnt shows), celebrity sober house, real world, confessions of a teen idol (mtv, vh1 shows). that is off the top of my head. but what i have noticed is the first airing of the show will specify NEW in the guide info. the re-airing of that episode (either later that night or later that week) there is no mention of it being NEW or REPEAT. the dvr treats each one of these as a new show. i could have 4-5 of the exact same epsiode of these shows if i dont go into scheduled recordings and cancel them every day.
btw im in a moto area |

 | MTV and VH1 shows are most notorious. Also Jon & Kate Plus 8 on TLC HD. |

| reply to CCGeorge I've noticed alot of the shows don't show up with episode descriptions until they air. Also why does the dvr record shows that have just a generic description? Shouldn't all shows have some sort of description.
IE: Hannah Montana will most often say something like: "a tennager goes through the troubles of growing older." Instead of the episode description, when it aired or if it's new or old!! So my dvr records all the hannah montana episodes even though they are from 2005 or 2006 not just the 2008 and 2009 ones!!! |

andyrossPremium,MVM join:2003-05-04 Schaumburg, IL | reply to ak I gave up trying to record Leno with a series recording and use the VCR-style repeating manual recording instead. MyDVR Set a Recording Create a Manual Recording Pick start time, end time, and first day (make certain day is a weekday for Leno, or it may screw up settings below) Pick channel Pick 'View recording settings' (wrench icon) Change 'Record' option to 'Mon-Fri' Make any other changes you want. If you set it to start at 11:35ET, you may want to use the option to start 1 minute early since Leno seems to start 30 seconds early. If you have two HD's starting at the same time (I also record Letterman), set it to start 2 minutes early to prevent a bug that can prevent one of the HD's from recording.
The drawbacks to the VCR-style recordings: Shown as date and time in both scheduled and completed recording lists instead of program name. If you try to cancel a single recording, either before or during recording, it will delete the entire scheduled series. It will always record, even if it's a repeat. It will not adjust if the program is scheduled later. You can manually adjust by hitting record on any scheduled recording, choosing the wrench icon, and adjusting the extra start or end time. |

fuziwuziNot born yesterdayPremium join:2005-07-01 Atlanta, GA | reply to CCGeorge My experience with the Comcast DVRs is that it was futile to set a series recording for anything on a "cable" channel (like Bravo, FX, Sci-Fi, Comedy, etc.). Doing so will only get you a box full of repeats and old episodes. Series recording only works (and even then not very reliably) on the "broadcast" networks like your local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC affiliates.
I made sure to have a backup way of obtaining any show I expected the DVR to record because to many times it simply didn't do as it should for various reasons. This behavior occurred on all models, from a 6412, 6416 Phase III to a 3416... in 2 years I had 5 different machines because they were replaced by Comcast techs.
I went back to the basic analog service and got my old TiVO Series 2 out of mothballs. It is reliable and I can set season passes for things on ANY channel and I know it is going to do as it should, it never fails me. -- *************** I think computer viruses should count as life. | reply to CCGeorge it's a shame but i think i'm going to buy a tivo series 3 and use it for my room plus my new media center pc. Drop the $15/month dvr service. |

AK @comcast.net | reply to CCGeorge On another cable provider with same Motorola DVR box, the options provided for setting a series recording are pretty much the same as Comcast's with one addition. It allows you to specify that "record only if program starts at this time". this way I could set to record Leno series new episodes only and also only if it starts at 11:35pm and on the speicfied channel only. This pretty much got rid of any repeats being recorded. I wish Comcast DVR software provided that option. |

 | reply to CCGeorge for phone and internet i did. Still have them for cable tv though as I forgot I owe directv $1100 and they won't allow us to open another account so until i pay the $1100 i am stuck with comcast. |

 | reply to andyross I have the same problem with the Leno 11:35 vs the repeat (unlabeled) at 2:35. Is the manual recording still the only option anyone is aware of?
Great idea though andyross! |

 | reply to CCGeorge You are lucky that you can even tell the difference between a new and repeat TV show. I live in Howard County Maryland and I have the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR. The DVR supports recording only new shows and not repeats but Comcast does not have that capability in Howard County and the option to only record new episodes doesn't even show up on my DVR. This is really pathetic that my DVR records every show not matter if it's a repeat or new show. |

lmacmil join:2001-01-26 South Bend, IN | reply to CCGeorge I set up a series recording for Damages, new episodes only. It records the original broadcast on Wednesday and 1 or 2 of the repeats of that broadcast. Haven't looked at the guide to see if the subsequent episodes are listed as new or repeat. |

Where do we report guide inaccuracies???? What about placing reports of the Comcast TV Guide being wrong? Do we have a place to post this? Tonight was the premier of Yanni Voices which started at 8PM on WTTW (PBS Chicago) according to the Comcast guide. In reality, it started at 7:30! WTF??? Why must this guide be wrong so often? I don't believe this was a last minute change by WTTW either.
Even if it was a change made within the last 24 hours or so, Comcast should be able to get the guide updated and automatically modify the DVR settings to adjust accordingly. My Tivo does it with schedule changes that have come through with much less than 24 hour lead time. Comcast, why have you not taken the lessons that Tivo learned long ago and applied it to your overpriced DVR's? |
