Well, after the incident with the trojan found on my returned Seagate 7200.11 drive (which was rather easy to clean up), I switched to Avira AntiVir. That one is now on both my desktop and laptop. My mother's PC is still using Avast.

I usually stay away from "protection" from M$ but they got a winner from me for their Security Essentials program.

To be more specific, I'm using the free, Home Edition of Avast. I've been using it for well over a few years now, and it has never let me down. It's fairly user-friendly, and is updated quite frequently.

I used to use AVG Home Edition, but once their version 8 came out, it seemed way too bloated, and ran slowly.
