CLI access through the ethernet port on the 5100b, 4100, 4100b Speedstreams only works while while the ATM connection is down. Those FAQs are primarily for persons interested in changing certain modem settings and then leaving them that way before starting a DSL connection through the modem. Once the DSL connection is started, access to the modem's CLI would be lost.
To have a continuous CLI access, you would have to install a console port.
all I'm after is the ability to set the community name in the 5100b so that I can hook MRTG to it to catch snmp data - if there is a different way to achieve this then I'm all ears

I'm assuming that disconnecting the cable to the modem would drop the ATM
quote:The use of SpeedStream5200FTP.exe with the Speedstream CLI must be made with a direct connection to the modem and after either a hard reset or a GUI reset (not a GUI restart) has been performed.
not sure where the hard reset button is, don't see one on the modem. assume that the GUI reset is the Advanced/Reset Modem option
Any reason to fear that the modem will be left inop after doing a GUI reset? All I should need is a printout of the Technican Readout and know my username and password, correct? Don't know what I don't know...
