 | I need help bridging my Westell 9100 EM router I recently had the FIOS internet/TV/phone triple plan installed and activated. Everything is working great, except that I'd prefer to use my own router instead of the Westell 9100EM that I was given. I was unable to find any kind of a guide for "bridging" this modem, but I did find one for the Actiontec router. The problem is I'm running into difficulties where these two routers are different. Specifically, from this guide:
»www3.dslreports.com/forum/r20006···th-REV-D
I am stuck at step 5. I can click to release the DHCP lease, but the router will almost immediately re-lease it again, and I can find no option anywhere that says anything about "No IP address". If I click on "quick setup" I am taken to a screen where there is a "Protocol Mode" pull-down box, but the only options are: auto detect, dynamic routed IP, manual PPPoE, and manual routed IP. I've been messing with this for the past couple hours trying everything I could think of and I can't get it to stop leasing a new IP in order to proceed with the next step of the instructions.
Please help! |

I had offered to help someone else bridge the Westell in this thread, »Re: How do I turn my Verizon 9100EM Router into a "Bridge" ? if they would email specific screen shots, but they decided to switch to a cat5 connection. Unfortunately, the manual does not provide sufficient information to do this. If you're willing to spend some time capturing screen shots, I'm reasonably sure we can get this working.
If you are interested, email or IM me for more information (you will have to register to do so). |

 | I also need bridging instructions for the Westell 9100EM. Please help.
Here are the screen shots. I didn't grab every page, there are too many. but I hope there are enough info.

I'd think the STB would get .100
Is that the default DHCP address range? Starting at .100? What if you were to start at .90?
Or, if it's like my DLink, they work backwards from .254 |

I can't get it to stop leasing a new IP in order to proceed with the next step of the instructions. Westells are famous for this. The best way to switch front routers on your connection is to remove the Westell, put your router in place, and call the FSC and have them break your lease.
Second option, would be to remove the Westell, put the other router in place, and wait 2 hours to turn it on (so the lease can expire).
Third option is MAC address cloning, but I'm guessing this is complicated by the fact that it has 6 MAC addresses, if it's like the Actiontec.
You're up against a 2 hour Public IP lease. We never found a way to stop the Westell DSL modems from doing that automatic reacquiring of a new lease. There's just no way to disconnect it fast enough when released.
If someone from Verizon [hint], who's watching the Westell questions, reads this, maybe they could drop a note to the firmware people and ask them to remove the auto reacquire feature, as it makes it impossible to release the IP. |

And yes, I was messing with DMZ, it is not on by default. i don't think the STB has to be on .100, it is on .102 now. |

The pages I captured are what I thought are relevant for the bridging. |

djbkom join:2009-02-26 Portland, OR | reply to VonZippa The way I got my setup to work was as follows:
On the Westell, disable wireless, disable DHCP, assign the Network (Home/Office) a static IP address of 192.168.1.10, set it with a gateway and DNS server of 192.168.1.1, and connect it LAN to LAN to my existing D-Link 4300. It also has the COAX connected to the wall jack.
On my D-Link 4300 which is connected to the ONT via CAT and has a static IP of 192.168.1.1, I had to clone the MAC address of the Westell, assign the MAC address of the STB to a reserved DHCP address of 192.168.1.100.
At this point I can receive the programming guide info and the widgets work. |

This thread was about getting option 5 (coax to ONT) working with the Westell. |

1 edit | Does the STB need the programing guide to function? I don't need the guide or VOD, so does that simplified my problem in getting the the Westell to bridge to my router?
How hard is it to switch to option 7 with the Cat5e? I can easily run a Cat5e from the Westell to the ONT. Is the ethernet on the ONT already active or do I need to call verizon to ask them to switch from coax to Ethernet?
I would happily keep the Westell as a router but the firewall on it is flaky. Setting DMZ host doesn't seem to work like it should, and port forwarding is slow and sometime unresponsive. I have zero problems with my D-Link DIR-655 in DMZ. |

birdfeedrPremium,MVM join:2001-08-11 Warwick, RI kudos:5 | STB does not need an internet connection to function, however remote access to a DVR, IMG updates, VoD, Guide and Widgets do require internet access. Also, I think internet access is needed initially to authorize new boxes.
If you can easily run cat5e from the ONT to the Westell, do it, connect it, then post your request to switch over in the VZDirect forum. It is not active until they switch it over.
If your intention is to run your DLink as primary, get the Westell switched over to ethernet WAN first. When that works, use the Option 7 FAQ to make the DLink primary with the Westell connected LAN-to-LAN.
Hmmm. The FAQ tells you how to connect the Actiontec, and the Westell is a little different. Problematic, some would say.
I've got a perfectly serviceable Actiontec, Rev C or D. Want to arrange a swap? I'll be able to update FAQs to account for Westell device.
