| I hope It's True I just got a G1 and would love "unlimited" voice/SMS/data despite not having 3G in my area, at least I wouldn't need to be tethered to a wireless router to check email and browse the web. 10 GB cap is pretty disappointing though, they should increase that.

| Re: I hope It's True Well, yesterday I had to call into T-mobile to activate the data plan temporarily so I could provision the phone onto Google's servers which was totally cool of T-mobile to do that without demanding I sign up for a data plan (you can't get past the initial setup of the phone without data activation or a jail broken version of the OS and some pretty technical hacking skills). I did ask them how much their cheapest data plan for the G1 runs, she told me for "unlimited" data only, would be an additional $24.99 per month. She didn't mention that it was specific to the G1, so I'm guessing this is their standard data plan for all devices and there is no "Android" plan that I know of, but I'm not 100% on that claim.
Of coarse if you do not opt for the data plan and just have it activated long enough to provision the phone on the system, if there is ever a glitch with their service (she even mentioned syncing issues?) and it kicks you out of your phone and requires you to log into your Google account before it will give you full access to your phone again, you will need to call T-mobile up again and have them enable data on you account long enough for you to re-provision it. She mentioned that it may take up to 48 hours to show up as active, but mine went active right after I hung up with the G1 support representative.

If you get upto 10GB, expect your data speeds to be throttled. They don't charge overage or stop data. That beats sprint with their 5GB cap. If the worst they do is slow you down, go for it. It could be a lot worse!
The sad part is tons of their network is still on gprs where i live. Get 60 miles west or south of chicago and you lose edge and 3g. Dialup speeds baby! Chicagoland metro area has expanded many miles. The area is growing. What was cornfields 5-8 years ago are now houses. Many houses. They really need to expand the data speeds.
That may not be that way everywhere though. I lived in Tampa, FL for a few months and went about 100 miles north and still kept edge. I can't go that far here! (Unless you go north, and get into Milwaukee.) | |

If i wanted to be mean, i could easly use up my 5GB on my trial sprint data card in a day or two downloading stuff on usenet. I don't plan on keeping the sprint line though. It was nice getting speeds faster than gprs on amtrak riding the amtrak train to Galesburg. But when i get to my final destination (abingdon, IL) there is no sprint coverage and my t-mobile line gets twice the speeds. I can easily get 200kbps while roaming on simmetry pcs while i get 50-100kbps roaming with my sprint card. 1xrtt i think. I am still getting used to this data card. First cdma line i have had in 7 years. (and i only had it for a few months. back in the late 90's. | |

Latency is about 115ms to 200ms depending on factors. This is using both the old wap apn and epc apn. If you don't have any internet plan, here is a tip. They are offering two specials right now.
#1- $5.99 t-zones plan. Unlimited data (well, upto 10GB with restrictions after) Below is the info.
I have a T-Mobile G1 phone which requires data plan and I initially signed up for $24.99 plan. 1) changed my phone model on website to samsung T-402
2) borrowed my friends old tmobile phone. (used it to call)
3) called 611 to cancel my 24.99 plan as I said I was using the samsung phone, CSR asked me for the ESN # by punching *#06# to change the phone from G1 to Samsung and drop 24.99 plan.
4)later called again 611- young guy picked up, told him hi, i'm looking to add tmobile unlimited web tzones 5.99 plan to my phone. He said they dont offer it anymore. I told him i had promotion code TZUNL599 , if he could try maybe that will work, as my phone offered it to me. also, told him people were able to add it, as recently as today. he said ok, he will try the code. then he put me on hold, came back and said he was able to add tmobile web 5.99 for me!!!
asked him also to add 400 text messages for 4.99. So for $10.99 I have data and text messages. Got myfaves added for free from the other thread.
You might have to call back a few times to get it. I was able to do it on the first call. The reason why this is highly recommended is because the new data plans are $9.99 with 100 MB usage and charges for using more. If you are considering the data plan, GET THIS WHILE YOU CAN!!! Use the epc.tmobile.com apn and you have unrestricted access to the internet. (only downside is it does compress images a little for faster loading time. If you tether, you can disable or change it by going to »2.2.2.2/ You can compress it more or less or disable compression entirely. I disable compression if i am in a 3g area. If i am on amtrak in gprs speeds, i fully compress the images. Images look like crap but it loads the page much quicker. Thats fine with me!
#2. Free myfaves with contract extension. Call up and say your thinking of canceling because of boost mobile's $50.00 offering. They will transfer you to retentions. You can ask what they can do and they might offer the free myfaves or just tell them a story. I did this for two friends. I told them i went into the t-mobile store and inquired about canceling and told the phone rep that the employee told me about the free myfaves promotion and said that would make up for the minutes. They both times said, No problem. We can do that! Added MyFaves to both accounts! I would do it myself, but i would only save $10.00. I would have to get rid of my current myfaves plan and get onto a non-myfaves plan and ask for the free myfaves. They might see into that. Yeah, thats $120 a year but i saved about $19-20 dollars by getting rid of the total internet for $24.99 and getting the $5.99 unlimited. Better than nothing.
Times are hurting and they know it. With these perks and the possible unlimited plan for $50, they appear to be trying. | |

If your phone is 3g capable, and your area has 3g capable towers, you'll get 3g on ANY data plan.
