| config suggestions for netopia 3347-02? Hi everyone,
I just bought a 3347-02 for my new DSL line with TekSavvy, and I've been getting horrendous downstream numbers like this:
I called Tech Support and apparently my line is spotless. They suggested that I try another modem, so I've switched my modem for another one (same make and model) and I still get these kinds of numbers.
I'm guessing that I have some config problems. Anyone have any suggestions? I've taken down my firewall, closed all browsers and P2P.
Thank you! | |

You say its the "3347-02" Is it the bellsouth "3347-02-1006" or an actual retail model?

| The model number on mine says 3347-02-1002. I haven't found any posts with that particular number, mostly -1006 like you mentioned.
I bought it the modem generic from a third party company, Caneris. There are some posts with this combo of modem/router with TekSavvy ISP working well, so I figured I wouldn't have a problem.

At first I was little hesitant because its not displayed for our model but its the latest firmware and it works great for me. Netopia modems has a safe guard where it will not load a firmware that doesn't match the hardware.
You can find the nta774r1.bin firmware here: »www.netopia.com/support/hardware/2246.html

| Re: config suggestions for netopia 3347-02? Thanks for the messages everyone. Just to bring both threads up to speed, I have had the modem replaced. Tech support at TekSavvy suggested that my laptop could have a faulty NIC or driver, but I borrowed a friend's laptop, and the speeds were the same.
I've used the Teksavvy speedtest, here are the results. These is with the firmware that came with the modem.

Strangely, for about a couple hours last night, the speeds were up to 3000/600. However, it's now back to this territory. Any thoughts about that?
I will be trying the new firmware today!

| Re: config suggestions for netopia 3347-02? Hey guys,
Some interesting results.
I tried to update my modem with the firmware version 7.7.4 v1, but the installation failed. No reason was given besides that it failed.
However, I tried updating the firmware to 7.6.1 r9 (the latest official version for my model). It worked, even though my model no. says 3347-02-1002.
»netopia.com/support/hardware/334···006.html
My speeds seem to have increased.

However, like I posted earlier, I was sporadically getting these speeds last night before upgrading the firmware. So I'll keep an eye on things, and post the results in a couple days.

But I will be trying another modem tonight. Updates coming.. thanks again everyone.

You may want to see the results of that... nevertheless, If the results are the same on the new modem the fault lies with TekSavvy.

| Re: config suggestions for netopia 3347-02? Well, TekSavvy has diagnosed my line and found some packet loss. So they placed a ticket in the queue and I'm waiting for reinforcements on their end.
Will let you know how it goes. Thanks so much everyone. You've all been really helpful

| Re: config suggestions for netopia 3347-02? Hi all,
Just wanted to give an update. Bell looked after my ticket, and they made some changes, namely that they activated 'fast mode' on my line. Not sure if there is a 'slow mode' too
I waited a few days before posting, and it seems that everything is fine with my connection now. I'm getting the speeds I should be (and paid for)!
Thanks to everyone here, including the helpful folks at Caneris and TekSavvy tech support. You have made it as stress-free as possible!

| I have a SpeedStream 4100, a fairly old unit, and it seems to not choke if I saturate u/l. I've skipped the Motorola 2210 "free" deal about a year or so ago for $13 shipping. I'm thinking of getting a Netopia 3347-02.
Does anyone know if it has "ack prioritization"? Since under the hood it's very similar to a Motorola 2210, with wireless, and less a few ports and half the flash and memory.

| Re: config suggestions for netopia 3347-02? I don't care much for the Motorola Netopia 2210-02-1006 modem because I don't think it is very reliable. I love the Motorola Netopia 3347-02-1006 because it has shown me that it it is ten foot tall and bulletproof.
Neither of them have "ack prioritization". They could because they are based on the TI AR7 family of processors and these processors have a feature called the TurboDSL Packet Accelerator. This feature would have to be implemented and enabled by the modem manufacturer in the firmware. It's not with the Netopia/Motorola Netopia modems.
.
ar7_turbodsl···f[1].pdf 123022 bytes TI AR7 TurboDSL Brief
High-performance Operation - TIs TurboDSL Packet Accelerator
"The AR7 is architected for optimal performance in delivering high-bandwidth services like combined data and video. TIs TurboDSL Packet Accelerator, a unique performance enhancement of the AR7 platform, minimizes the choking effect on pipeline traffic. The TurboDSL hardware uses a Priority Queuing feature to send prioritized TCP Ack packets ahead of the other upstream traffic, resulting in an up to 3x increase in downstream throughput without impacting upstream data transfer rate. Because of the asymmetrical nature of ADSL, the effect of TurboDSL will increase by up to 6x as service providers migrate to ADSL2/2+ deployments."
.
I'm in the AT&T Southeast region. This was the old BellSouth.
All of our ADSL2+ capable modems, except for the 2Wire modems, are based on the TI AR7 processor. None of them with current firmware are capable of "ack prioritization". The Westell 6100 and maybe the Westell Versalink 327W had a feature called "TurboTCP". TurboTCP was TIs TurboDSL Packet Accelerator re-branded by Westell.
I used a BellSouth supplied Westell 6100 when it had a firmware version that included the option to enable TurboTCP. This feature worked as advertised. This feature was hidden from the configuration GUI with a later firmware update. Why they did this I don't know. It pisses me off.
The configuration GUI is just a website and the pages in the configuration GUI are just webpages. You can go to the webpage in the configuration GUI and look at the source code and the TurboTCP option is still there. It's just hidden from view. There is some way to attack websites and inject code into them. I bet a smart fellow could figure out some way to enable TurboTCP on those Westell's. -- It is not possible to achieve 'equality' between things that are, fundamentally, not equal!

| Thanks for the info. Airwolf7,
I didn't get the Motorola 2210 because it is almost identical to the Speedstream 4100, without ack prioritization, and burns itself out in a few months. Even though their firmware is similar, with twice the ram, I figure it'll be MUCH more reliable than the Motorola 2210. No wonder it's used for businesses & most 24/7 connections. My friend did some thermal monitoring on his 2210 and said as long as you do not constantly run p2p applications on a high speed line constantly, the temperature only remains relatively warm.
Heeding your advice, I'll get a Netopia 3347 when I'm at the AT&T store next week located near the mall. Only $20 more than a 2Wire (there most popular). Few people seem to want them "business-class modems". If needed, I can always ask them to do a special order.

A fellow just can't go to wrong with a Motorola Netopia 3347-02 ADSL2+ Wireless Gateway.
Don't forget that you can also order one online from the AT&T Store.

| Many thanks Airwolf7 for the sound advice.
I have one issue/feature I need.
I use "PPP is on the modem", where the public IP is passed to my dual-band router. I'm wondering if I can also have it done on the Netopia 3347?
I've seen older DSL modem would simply pass 192.168.0.1 to my 192.168.1.1 router... when PPP is on the modem -- which creates headache when trying to access my net from outside, a very problematic double-nat. The SS4100 actually passes on the public IP to my router, which is GREAT!!!
I need the separate net for my 802.11n stuff, and am wondering if the 3347 can do it?
