anon : Thanks for the info. Airwolf7,

I didn't get the Motorola 2210 because it is almost identical to the Speedstream 4100, without ack prioritization, and burns itself out in a few months. Even though their firmware is similar, with twice the ram, I figure it'll be MUCH more reliable than the Motorola 2210. No wonder it's used for businesses & most 24/7 connections. My friend did some thermal monitoring on his 2210 and said as long as you do not constantly run p2p applications on a high speed line constantly, the temperature only remains relatively warm.

Heeding your advice, I'll get a Netopia 3347 when I'm at the AT&T store next week located near the mall. Only $20 more than a 2Wire (there most popular). Few people seem to want them "business-class modems". If needed, I can always ask them to do a special order.

Airwolf7 : I don't care much for the Motorola Netopia 2210-02-1006 modem because I don't think it is very reliable. I love the Motorola Netopia 3347-02-1006 because it has shown me that it it is ten foot tall and bulletproof.

Neither of them have "ack prioritization". They could because they are based on the TI AR7 family of processors and these processors have a feature called the TurboDSL™ Packet Accelerator. This feature would have to be implemented and enabled by the modem manufacturer in the firmware. It's not with the Netopia/Motorola Netopia modems.

.

[att=1]

High-performance Operation - TI’s TurboDSL™ Packet Accelerator

"The AR7 is architected for optimal performance in delivering high-bandwidth services like combined data and video. TI’s TurboDSL™ Packet Accelerator, a unique performance enhancement of the AR7 platform, minimizes the “choking” effect on pipeline traffic. The TurboDSL™ hardware uses a Priority Queuing feature to send prioritized TCP Ack packets ahead of the other upstream traffic, resulting in an up to 3x increase in downstream throughput without impacting upstream data transfer rate. Because of the asymmetrical nature of ADSL, the effect of TurboDSL will increase by up to 6x as service providers migrate to ADSL2/2+ deployments."

.

I'm in the AT&T Southeast region. This was the old BellSouth.

All of our ADSL2+ capable modems, except for the 2Wire modems, are based on the TI AR7 processor. None of them with current firmware are capable of "ack prioritization". The Westell 6100 and maybe the Westell Versalink 327W had a feature called "TurboTCP". TurboTCP was TI’s TurboDSL™ Packet Accelerator re-branded by Westell.

I used a BellSouth supplied Westell 6100 when it had a firmware version that included the option to enable TurboTCP. This feature worked as advertised. This feature was hidden from the configuration GUI with a later firmware update. Why they did this I don't know. It pisses me off.

The configuration GUI is just a website and the pages in the configuration GUI are just webpages. You can go to the webpage in the configuration GUI and look at the source code and the TurboTCP option is still there. It's just hidden from view. There is some way to attack websites and inject code into them. I bet a smart fellow could figure out some way to enable TurboTCP on those Westell's.
--
It is not possible to achieve 'equality' between things that are, fundamentally, not equal!
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

ar7_turbodsl···f[1].pdf 123,022 bytes
TI AR7 TurboDSL Brief

config suggestions for netopia 3347-02?

anon : Hi everyone,

I just bought a 3347-02 for my new DSL line with TekSavvy, and I've been getting horrendous downstream numbers like this:

I called Tech Support and apparently my line is spotless. They suggested that I try another modem, so I've switched my modem for another one (same make and model) and I still get these kinds of numbers.

I'm guessing that I have some config problems. Anyone have any suggestions? I've taken down my firewall, closed all browsers and P2P.

Thank you!
