Download speeds with WZR 2-G300n

I am having some major problems with consistent downloads using this router.

I'm on Verizon DSL 3mb/750 plan. When I am connecting through my router I get speeds:

292/699

However, when I connect directly to my Verizon modem I get:

2296/695

I am connected to LAN port and I have WPA2-PSK on, with 1.00_1.26 firmware. It also affects wireless connections, but I haven't tested for actual numbers.

Why are the speeds so far off? Thanks in advance!
