There are about six million unfilled coupon requests pending. That is why the deadline was extended.
Notwithstanding partisan grandstanding, the entire program was a waste of my money. Explain to me why I am financing via tax dollars someon else's access to television? Since when did it become a right in this country to watch the b00b tube?? If you can't afford a converter box then too bad so sad. Read a friggin book. It's not my problem.

This has been beaten to death. First it is not your taxes it is proceeds from spectrum auction. Channels 52-69 are being removed from TV service and used for other purposes. The auction netted about $20 billion and about 10% of that is being used to fund the coupon program.

As far as why it was done - the reason is the US Constitution.

quote:
Amendment V

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

The transition from analog to digital transmitting is the the government taking away your property. Something you own is not worth less due to government's action. The Coupon Program is intended to address that issue.

1. Where is it written that analog airwaves are owned by the public? If that is the case, then where is my check for the sale of those airwaves when they were sold off? Why didn't anyone consult me if I have an ownership claim in those airwaves. I don't recall being consulted for my opinion or permission.

2. You can't have it both ways. You claim that analog airwaves are publicly owned, then you cite an Amendment that has to do with compensation for eminent domain - the government's taking of private property without compensation. Whaa?

Where did I mentioned analog airwaves. I'm talking about the equipment each of us purchased to view TV programs. That equipment no longer works for over the air transmission because government mandated a new type of broadcast technology and forced retirement of legacy system.

Re: So, the world didn't end

The Government isn't taking your equipment away from you. You still own it and can enjoy it with cable TV, DVD players or even low power TV stations.

There were no converter box coupons issued when they took away channel 1 or 70-83, or when the FCC shut down analog cellphones.

Technology becoming obsolete really has nothing to do with the constitution.

Transition to DTV diminishes value of your property - it can no longer be used for it primary purpose. Coupon program does not replace a user's TV nor does it provide access to new features made possible by DTV. It simply restores access to over the air broadcast lost by the conversion to digital transmission. I'm struggling to understand why Coupon program is so controversial.

Neither of those actions had any effect on use of your TV.

ZERO of your tax $$ was used for the program. Please get educated on a topic before speaking on it.
