2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

Hello All
Time we start preparing for the Championship on the south side....question remains whom will be our 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman, and perenial problem center field position.

I'm hoping Getz turns it around. I'd also like to see Anderson used only as a utility

whom don't you trust...Contreras and Colon will be injured by all star break leaving KW with some decisions to make.

I see Crede got picked up by the Twins....he'll come back to haunt.

Sigh...live by the Oz, die by the Oz!

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

Living by the Oz is a good thing - he's gotten the most any manager can get out of his players - certainly that was the case last year. His only bad season as a manager was 2007. I'm an Ozzie fan. Rheinsdorf, not so much, although I don't hate the guy the way some do.

Contreras won't even be ready till mid-season, if at all or ever. Colon, probably a bad bet, but it won't cost much.

That leaves the kids. We'll see who does what over the next few weeks.

The koolaid has you now on board with his money saving agenda. This years koolaid really hit you hard but I don't worry because the antidote will be here by mid summer. Hope you get well soon.

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

Oh come on! I'm not saying it was a great move - although if the guy manages to stay healthy he's a hellova pitcher - but it isn't a move that will prevent them from making other moves.

I am NOT a koolaid drinker - just remembering my hostility at this time last year and taking a more moderate wait-and-see attitude this year. It's no fun to hate the team you love.

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

I'll never hate MY team but I see things the way they are. I'll still go to games (probably less tho) and watch them on tv. I look in the paper and see signings the Sox should have done. Today I see Hudson. The worse thing in life is being played a sucker and that's what is happening this year to Sox fans. In previous years the Sox have said everyone is over priced and the market will correct itself. Well they were right, it did correct itself this year ( except for the early yank signings) and where is the chairman's hand? Still in his pocket rubbing those 2 buffalo nickels against each other.

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

Sry for the double post....
The Sox still have a good chance at playing some decent ball this year provided the players that are getting paid big money actually earn it!(cough..cough..Konerko)
Thing that bothers me is the dismissal of Crede. Now I understand it's imperative to have healthy players, but if you're going to take that approach, why pick up Colon?
Contreras is a question mark as well.
as far as the chairman goes...name a chairman thats not rubbing nickels together. Yeah, I know, Stienbrenner. But I really don't want to spend a thousand dollars a ticket either!

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

At this time a year ago I picked the Sox to come in just ahead of KC. This year I'm taking a wait and see attitude. I think KW did what he said he would; make the team younger. There are a lot of question marks - and we all agree about that. But the core is good, and the pitching will probably be OK.

It's a strong division, and there is a good chance that everyone will pretty much cancel each other out.

We'll see. Opening day in only 5 1/2 weeks!

I can understand why they let Crede go. he didn't get the surgery when they wanted him to, and then his back went again. My person belief is that it's chronic and will be back - which is a shame. Crede is a class player. I liked him, but he gone.

Contreas will be back in the rotation sometime in April from what it looks like. he is 30 lbs. lighter and seems to be in fairly good shape. first time i've ever thought those words let alone wrote them. Colon I expect to be around for at least a half season before he gets injured. hopefully I'm wrong but he does have a track record. 2nd base is what i'm most worried about. I'm not sure who will end up there, but hope it is someone who is a smart player. all the other OF and IF positions i'm ok with. Konerko I think will be back this year, as long as he stays healthy.....

The 5th pitching spot...oh, the 5th spot. Clayton Richard will probably get the spot, just hope he can be consistently good. I'd settle for even decent.

now i plan to enjoy spring training

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

You are setting up an almost optimal scenario. The Contreras thing is just amazing - I really thought his career was over, given that he's about 60 years old or something!

I hope you are right. That said, I'm not too worried about 2B. One of those guys will fill the bill.

Viciedo hit a dinger off of Garland today, and Poreda apparently looked good.

In spite of JR's skinflint attitude, I think KW did a good job in the off-season.

I just saw the homer hit by Viciedo. Damn at only 19 he must be already challenging Colon and Jenks to be 1st in line at the buffet.

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

He's a big boy - packs a lotta power, as Early Wynn would have put it.

The Contreras thing is amazing too - I would not have believed that he'd be back. And Colon - well, if the guy can stay healthy - right now, as you point out he's also a big boy with a lot of power who is not in the best of shape, he'll help.

It's funny - there was an article in the NY Times about how many ballplayers have literally shrunk due to no longer being juiced. I don't think Colon's weight is the result of steroids. More like a lotta beans and rice!

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

I would guess there have been others also, but the Sox have been one of the few clubhouses where there has been a general anti-steroid attitude, going back a long way. Frank Thomas was so vocal about being against them, and so angry about the schlubs who did take them that I'd be truly shocked if it turned out he had taken them.

Generally, I think the Sox were pretty good about it - certainly in the 2000 - 2003 period when geniuses like A-Rod and Palmiaro were taking them, by their own admission. Belle was here over ten years ago. Luckily for us Sox fans, steroids have not been a large part of the Sox culture, which is interesting due to the nature of their ballpark and the number of sluggers they have had.

Chris getz at second...I anticipate good things from him.
What a dismal spring training though...losing to the Cubs today...disgraceful. I guess we'll make up for that at the end of the season. I'm looking forward to opening day and the end to this 6 month winter.

Right, with 14 games to go before the real show begins.

I'm strangely confident. We have three guys - Jone, Bartolo, and Clayton Richard competing for two slots. I like that - especially because all of them are looking pretty good.

I think these guys are dark horses.

I'm kinda worried about 3rd base. Fields is a good hitter but from the couple of games I've seen, it looks like it might be quite the adventure this year at that corner.

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

It's an issue - and one that they are aware of. Crede saved a hellovalota games for us at 3rd. Now Josh is gonna have to hit his way into our hearts, because he sure won't be throwing leather like Joe.

In aggregate it's worrying; with the exception of Paulie at 1st, the entire IF is new or now to the position (Ramirez).

We'll see. They led the Cactus League in errors.

We have a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wise gets nod as Sox' starting CF/leadoff man....

This reminds me of the Chi-Bears quarterback position. So many players, none that seem to fit.So for a successful season we need the....
-old timers to actually come through
-and the n00bs to step up to the challenge

this is going to be an interesting season. I foresee lots of profanity!

If the pitching holds up they will be fine.

That said, Wise is a career minor leaguer who ain't no leadoff man or CF.

It is nice to see that a lot of teams have hardly increased ticket prices as salaries are held at bay. It also not that nice when salaries are slashed and ticket increases are in the top 5.

They Won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somebody need to sit with Wise and fill him on the fundamentals of hitting. He looked terrible. I hope that experiment gets cut short if things don't improve.
the rest of the team looks good, a bit over anxious, but good.
Its nice to have baseball back on the Southside!

Wise is a career minor leaguer - he kinda got the gig by default. Owens and Anderson failed, so Wise ended up with it.
Id rather see Getz lead off with AJ in the 2-hole, and Anderson or Wise 9th.

My guess is that this is what we will see before too long. I like Getz - he looked good out there today - no jitters and no rookie screwups. Fields too. But as usual, a lack of team speed is the major offensive issue, as it has been. That's why Owens failure to make the team, and KWs seeming inability to get us a real lead off guy continues to be a problem. I mean, AJ getting thrown out at 2nd and Dye walking into an out at the plate looked a hellovalot like 2007 and 2008 - not good.

But if the pitching holds up - Dotel was Gallant today, not Goofus - and that includes the Latino fossils at the back end of the rotation - they will be extremely competitive.

It was a fun game and wasn't even all that cold in the sun.

you know, when thome, dye and konerko were on base all alone with nobody out....it re-occurred to me that for every base they advance they will need a hit. There will be no extra bases with this geriatric mid lineup!

I think your right about the batting line up, D-Wise more than likely will be swapped for Anderson. I never thought i'd see the day when I was hoping for Anderson to be a starter!

Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

I agree with all your points.

So yeah - team speed is still a problem and they won yesterday like they often win - with the home run.

The good news is that:

-- It was a three-run shot, not a solo.
-- Fields bunted himself on, and Getz hit to RF - great execution by both guys.
-- Dotel looked un-hittable out there, and Jenks was his usual self.

This is still a thumping mule train team. Live and die with the long one and they won't manufacture many runs. The key to hanging around will be the 4 and 5 starters whoever they may end up being.

I don't expect to see the same Quentin and Ramirez of last year either but last year they both had a magical year. I'm hoping for Getz to be a Tony Grafinnino type at worst and Craig Counsell at best. Father time may start catching up with A.J., catching takes its toll. I expect Dye, Thome and PK to have similar years as last, which wasn't that great. Fields looks ok in the field which will be a plus but he is a thumper at heart and will have a lot of K's. CF has to be given to Anderson because at least he can field. I expect Beckham to be brought up in June if CF turns to a disaster area with Ramirez going to center and Beckham playing short.

The pen success will depend on Linebrink. If he is not able to be set up, then it forces Dotel to move up which is not the consistency needed there. And of course saving the pen, with good outings by the starters particularly the 4 and 5's.

I get pissed at that penny pincher so much but damn I love baseball and my Sox. It's great to have them back.
