Re: 2009 Chicago White Sox Thread

Why does everyone want to see Dye let loose...?... I think he's the most consistent hitter the Sox have and I know he's getting up there but he has at least two years left...

I know I dont want to lose Dye and most fans feel the same way. But the Sox ownership will want a sweet home town discount from a player that has given his heart and soul to the organization. (You would think it would be just the opposite and a nice bonus would be in order)

I guess it all comes down to "You cant spend a buck if you only have 50 cents"

Hell, I'd love to keep him till he's 40. He's an outstanding player (and human being from what I undewrstand) in every way.

Just bowing to the reality. Although you never know...

As a Cubs fan, I must say Congratulations to Mark Buehrle for his perfect game! What an amazing pitching performance.

I wont lie, I flipped on the 10 oclock news to catch the replays of that after hearing so much about it. Incredible.

time to recover from Detroit. 2 games handed to them...how sad is that. The Sox better figure out where they want to be in October.

Sox land Peavy.

Look at his salary numbers between now and 2013. KW convinced JR. Big money. Big risk. Possibly huge rewards.

Ready to pitch by the end of August.

Sox rotation at that point:

Buehrle
Peavy
Floyd
Danks
Contreras

HOLY SHIT! That's a rotation! WOO HOO!

Don't rush him back or you'll end up with what we had on the Northside in Prior. Big contract and no production.

I was out of town and when I heard, I thought I was dead and in heaven. Congrats to Kenny for convincing the chairman to dig in his couch to find a couple quarters to go with the half a buck he has.

This is the most excited I've been in awhile. Actually since 05. I still don't know if they can do it this year but I LOVE they are actually trying to.

My opinion is that it is going to be a great move once he comes back, even if it isn't in 2009. Richard gave us three good starts and five bad ones so we haven't really given up that much for this years effort, and if Peavy does come back at the end of August or the beginning of September and is effective, it's gonna be the bomb.

The $22 million in 2013 is pretty excessive, but by then Peavy will either be:

- Gone.
- The Sox will spend the $4 million to buy him out.
- He'll be an all-time Sox hero and will get the 22 mil and deserve it.

Again, I am not a JR fan, but in fairness, I think the Albert Belle thing burned the guy (I was living in Ireland in those years and missed that, along with the "white flag trade"). Whatever I have said about KW in the past, I think I was wrong - he's the ballsiest GM in town.

Sox 7 Yanks 2 in the 5th. Woo hoo!

Glad to have you back Pat!

Win tomorrow and its the 1st Sox 4game sweep of the yanks since 1964. They look good. Monday is great also, a well deserved day off. Hope those kids on the tribe are hungry tonight and tomorrow.

Yeah - I remember it well - it precipitated the famous Yogi Berra - Joe Pepitone harmonica incident! I was 10.

1964 was one of my favorite Sox season! Win 98 that year.

Yes our 1st double digit year. Damn yanks broke my heart so many times as a kid. Very few good memories vs. the yanks.

Did you ever see the Jean Shepherd bit about his Dad and Lou Gehrig? "Gehrig you New York bum!"

Jean Shephard - he died a few years ago - is the guy who wrote Christmas Story and a few other funny movies. Grew up in Hanmond and worked at the mills when he was a kid.

In the 30s when he was a kid his dad took him to games all the time - they would sit upstairs in right field, a place I used to sit a lot, near the foul pole.

Jean tells this story while sitting up there in an empty, echo-filled, ghostly off-season Comiskey Park (it was filmed in the early 80s). So they are up there playing the Yankees. His Dad really disliked Gehrig, probably because he as a collage boy. So it's a close game - Lefty Gomez vs. Ted Lyons. 8th inning. 1 - 0 Sox, Yanks up, guy on 1st. Gerhig at the plate. The park gets kind of quiet.

At this point Shepherd goes into a thing about at his age at the time - 8 or 9 - you just love your Dad to no end. He's your hero and can do no wrong under any circumstances. Anything he does is just so cool.

So his Dad stands up in the silence and shouts at the top of his lungs: "Gehrig, you're a BUM, A NEW YORK BUM!!" It echoed around the park. Everyone looked at him. In the video (I looked for it on YouTube and it wasn't there) they do a great editing job of Gehrig looking at him from the batters box.

Then there's silence. Jean just LOVES his Dad. "My dad is so cool! Look what he just did! Everyone thinks he's the coolest. He just showed that New York bum Gehrig!"

Of course Lou proceeds to hit it off the RF foul pole, and that's the game. And all the fans in the area blame his Dad. And his Dad didn't go to so many games after that and he didn't seem as cool to young Jean.

Just another sad Sox - Yankees tale. Really funny, told in Shepherd's first-person style, just like Christmas Story (it's Shepherd's voice narrating both).

I had a similar experience in 1963. I was 9. It was August. My Dad didn't do anything goofy and nobody blamed him for anything, but we were up there in the RF upper deck. Peters - rookie of the year that year - was going for #20 against the Yanks and an aging Whitey Ford. 1 - 0 Sox in the 8th. Man on 1st, Maris up. Not as dramatic as the shot in Shepard's story, but Roger did put one in the upper deck and that was the game, that was the end of Peter's quest for 20, that was the end of the Sox chance to catch the Yankees (we ended up in 2nd, 10 games out).

SO - TODAY WE SWEEP!

Thanks, that amused me. I am sitting here with my stomach in knots like I was as a little boy either at a Sox-yanks game or waiting for it to come on the radio.

I know the division games are so much more important these days but to me there is still nothing like beating the yanks. Damn I want this sweep so bad.

Alex Rios of the Jay was picked off the waiver wire and rumor has it that the Sox were the ones. The Jays now have the choice of letting him go, working out a deal or pulling him back.

Rios is expensive and having a bad year but is young and a good outfielder. This could turn into something interesting.

I'm out of town but I just saw that. $60 mil over the next few years. I suspect they are just trying to block Detroit.

Nice game last night - good come from behind. For once the pen get us out of trouble the starter got us into.

When it 1st came out I thought they were blocking also. But now and a couple days later and no word that Rios has been pulled back, I am thinking they are talking with the Sox.

If true it solves CF and leadoff - sorry Pods - but boy is he expensive! Maybe the jays would pay some of it, like Philly and Thome.

If it's true KW is gearing up to make the Sox a team that can compete with the big eastern division teams.

Maybe he convinced JR that you gotta spend a nickle to make a dime. I mean, attendance has picked up, and if Peavy performes as hoped, this is a good, young team. Beckham is the real deal, and Getz has really improved - he's got eh 2B job now.

And considering that Baseball Prospectus or whatever it is called the Sox for 72 and 90 season, it all looks pretty exciting!
