| Looking for a new ISP.
Hi, I'm looking for a new ISP and Velcom seems to have a really good deal. 30$ for unlimted DSL at 5.0mbps. I wanted to know if their service is good.
1) Do they have random disconnections, if so how frequently? 2) Do they throttle like Bell? 3) How is their customer service? Do their tech support know what they're talking about, etc?
Thanks for reading. |

| Hey, I'm with Velcom.
1.They have disconnections sometimes but like other dsl service, the uptime is not 100% guaranteed (you'll have to get T1 or a T3 for the 100% uptime guarantee). But it's been stable.
2. Unfortunately, since they use Bell's DSL network, they are throttled by Bell. BUT... one of the way to circumvent the throttling is to use the MLPPP (Velcom supports it) firmware (Tomato/MLPPP) with a compatible router (such as the Linksys WRT54GL). That way, the throttling is circumvented.
3. It's been great, in comparison to other companies, when they say they're going to call back, they actually do. Plus, the Velcom techs are on this site so you can ask your questions here.
I hope that answered your questions. |

@bell.ca | reply to Xakam Ah ok, thanks for the info. What exactly is MLPPP though? I have a Trenet TEW 452BRP routher. Would it work with that? |

| MLPPP is used to used to merge 2 DSL lines as one so it doubles your download and upload speed.
In this case, people figured out that Bell's throttling equipment didn't recognize MLPPP, therefore a firmware was developed so that single lines can use it. With it, you're able to bypass the throttling.
No, the TEW 452BRP wouldn't work. You'll need this router »canadacomputers.com/index.php?do···d=NT.489 combined with this firmware »fixppp.org/ |

@bell.ca | reply to Xakam Ah ok. How frequent are the disconnections though? Are they like once a day? Several times a day? Once a week? A rough estimation would be nice.
Thanks for the replies! |

| reply to Xakam The disconnects are really not frequents. One time, my connection uptime was up for 45 days. And one of their transit provider (GBLX) had a problem, since then, they have added internap and they will add one more, which means it's going to be stable.
They've been very honest about their problems, unlike some companies. So you shouldn't worry about it. It's very stable. |

@bell.ca | reply to Xakam Sounds really good. I really wish I could find more user reviews on their service though. It'd be nice to find out what people think. There's not many on dslreports.
Thanks for all the replies Quake! |

| reply to Xakam This forum is quiet in comparison to the Teksavvy group! Velcom is slowly adding more Peers and upgrading their equipment. Every small ISP has their "growing" stages, Velcom recently moved all of their hardware to a new data center (151 Front Street) which is where a majority of the major ISP's in the GTA/surrounding areas house their equipment. |
