Still a cheaper alternative than other activities

Those that are cutting costs should be looking at the big picture. I know everyone is feeling the pinch these days. In the end, it comes down to how you want to spend your money. I am not a bar person. I don't go out to eat a lot. So I spend a little more money on entertainment at home like Warhammer Online MMORPG subscription, games for my computer and consoles, and Directv.

I have a friend who hates cable/satellite television because he says its a waste of money. He canceled his television subscription last year in November. He still constantly bitches that he can't watch his shows on FX and the hockey games on the sports networks. Yet, he will go out to bars 2-3 nights a week and spend $30-$40 a night in beer and food. So about $200 a month on the low side, and my directv bill isn't even half that.

I know some people here say that directv, comcast, charter, and so on are all too expensive. Just as there are people who believe that MMORPGs and games for your computer are a waste of money. In the end, it comes down to how you want to spend your entertainment dollar. There is no right and wrong answer here. Just what you prefer.

your friend is actually getting to talk to people regularly which is far better than watching TV programs.

No offense but your post is the quintessential American PoV for me - people need to kick this shitty TV program we have here so price will go down, PoC channels will disappear (yes, I am willing to pay $4-5 per channel monthly if I can put together my own package.)

That your opinion. I have no desire to deal with the public especially when they are drunk. Trust me, one night at the bar for me equals the entire month of my TV costs. You want to not watch tv, then good for you. Some people enjoy it so who are you to say someone else is wrong or that we should all take your opinion as gospel? And, no, I dont watch much TV but when I do I have more of a choice than the 3 channels I can get OTA or trying to watch something on my monitors that are half the size of my tv.

I guess the last paragraph I typed didn't register with you eh? There is no wrong answer here man. The way you spend your entertainment dollars is no better than the way I spend them. It all comes down to preference.

If you want to go out to a bar and spend that kind of money talking to other people, then great. I prefer watching hockey and doing some woodwork with my Dremel in the basement than spending money at the bar.

I guess you speak for everyone though as you know what everyone wants. Heck, what you say must be right and everyone else is wrong. Love that attitude.

Sorry but you are hopelessly clueless about your friend: he is actually getting to talk to people regularly which is far better than watching retarded TV programs.

Just as I said: it's the quintessential American TV-hooked way of life.
May I ask what do you watch on TV that is sooo addictive?

Why should anyone have to defend their TV viewing habits to you? Its not like you will like them anyway and call it a waste of time. Since you asked though, I will bite.

I love the Detroit Red Wings and watch just about every game. Then you have the NHL Network and Versus which has NHL games on. Lastly, I get the NHL Center Ice package which is great for a hockey nut like me.

Discovery Channel is simply awesome. My wife and I love the other educational programming such as the History, Biography, Smithsonian, Military, and the Science Channel. ESPN is also entertaining to watch as well.

I guess you are just unable to cope with my point hence this refusal - TV is the shittiest mindless "entertainment" of all, sorry.

I guess that's the problem: I don't do wood work in my basement so I don't need too much "entertainment" on the TV... but I watch hockey time-by-time...

Well, I said the US TV lineup is an utter crap, 80% of the channels are worthless piece of crap, carrying no value at all and it won't change until people start kicking this sh!t (down to the basement... ;D)

I guess Nielsen is wasting all kinds of money collecting TV ratings when they could just be asking you what's good.

Understandable - I like hockey too - though I truly despise all sport packages for the flat-out ripoff pricing so I refuse to pay for it. I go and see a game instead few times a year.

There you go. Let me make a bet here: you pay a LOT more than these few channels would cost you a la carte - and that's the point I'm talking about: we have to aggressively push back these corporations, we have to stop this bundling-overpricing sh!t.

When did I say that anything that was on tv is addictive? Try reading the post instead of being insulting and asinine. Your arguments are also inane. By your judgment, anyone that even looks at a TV is "TV-hooked". Sorry, thats a sweeping generalization thats absolutely rediculous. If you think its more productive and worthwhile to go out, get drunk, and then drive home instead of watching a program on TV, then good for you. Maybe I should call you an alcoholic since you do seem to think that going to a bar is time better spent than watching tv. By your reasoning, thats a perfectly acceptable conclusion, right?

Funny you mentioned Nielsen ratings. They just released their 4th qtr numbers and guess what? TV viewing is up to highest levels ever.
»tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20090223/···een_time
Americans watched more television than ever in the fourth quarter, The Nielsen Co. reported Monday, even though the Internet is providing another way to watch.

The average American older than 2 years watched television for 151 hours per month, Nielsen said.

That was up from 146 hours in the same period the previous year.

More watching of recorded TV explained some of the increase: that was up to 7 hours from 5 hours the year before. That included digital video recorders like the TiVo and "Start Over" features offered by some cable companies.

In a separate report out Monday, Leichtman Research Group said only 1 percent of adults view recent TV shows online daily, and they're no more likely to consider disconnecting their TV subscriptions.

Going to a Red Wings game costs me 5 hours of drive time round trip + parking + tickets + gas. If I don't eat anything, its about $175 if I get cheap seats. The NHL Center Ice package costs less than that.

Oh, and I still go a few times a year to see an AHL game. Those games are 5 minutes for me to get to and back from. Seats cost about $5-$12 each cause I buy flex packages or cheap tickets in advance. Parking is free for me as well.

Heck of a lot cheaper than trying to get to 1-2 NHL games in a season.

As for the prices of the channels individually, it just doesn't bother me to pay for satellite TV. Always something on to watch and I enjoy it.

I think some folks actually talk themselves into believing that they're not getting a good-enough value from cable, probably not even realized that they're spiting themselves far more so than the cable company that they harbor anger for.

Indeed. It seems rather disingenuous to advocate that television has no value in a forum devoted to television.

Regardless, I resonate with what you've said about dealing with the public when they are drunk. I believe many people would much prefer to have friends over their house, perhaps to watch the game, or to share the experience of watching a movie together without having to worry about sitting in a seat that someone dumped a 48 oz cup of soda into an hour earlier.

There is no reason to believe that cable channels would cost less a la carte. That's a myth perpetuated by folks who just want to shake things up perhaps so that they can have something else to complain about. Most experts agree that a fully a la carte situation would result in channels costing about $4 per month, so breaking-even with the current tiered packages after a certain number of channels. Just about half the people would pay more; just about half would pay less; and the only difference between the revenue cable companies take in now versus how much they'd take in then would be accounted for in termination of cable channels that would appeal to minority interests. That inevitability would almost surely be followed by Congressional hearings, and the Obama administration issuing an executive order directing the FCC to require something to reverse that -- perhaps provision of a certain number of minority interest channels with the cost of them subsidized by a mandated surcharge imposed on all a la carte customers and onto all packages that don't include such channels. End-result: No change.
