| DNS is very slow at night for Socal
I know there are still those of us in Socal with speed problems, but I've noticed that mine wasn't always the speed, but with the initial lookup of all the domains.
Performing a quick ping against the primary and secondary dns found that it was 80-100+ms in response time! This is what explained why speedtest.net showed decent speeds (degraded in the evening), but visiting pages was still very painful. I've since switched to opendns (which gets regular latency of around 30-40ms) and my snappy browsing continued. |

| The SoCal DNS servers absolutely SUCK!. I don't exactly know what is wrong with them, but they are either slow as hell, don't work at all, or don't resolve certain hosts.
Just like you I use OpenDNS: »www.opendns.com/
I don't think it is the latency by the way causing the problems, 80-100ms is a good ping for the east coast, and you should be able to use a east coast DNS server without much problems. There are other problems that plague the SoCal DNS servers that make them so incredibly rotten.
I entered the OpenDNS addresses in my router, so all my PC's (and any new ones in the future) will automatically all use OpenDNS.
And although the OpenDNS redirector is far from perfect, at least I won't get redirected to some TWC site, if they ever implement DNS redirection. -- "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" |

| reply to SocalUser Something is definitely wrong!
I thought it was originally latency, but sometimes web pages won't load at all!!! Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 tries to get a web page to load.
Speedtest.net won't even initiate my first try's ping. I have to F5 the thing & the 2nd time it usually will go.
Also getting very weird speedtests. Here on dslr, I'll do a speedtest & the download rate looks VERY much like 6/512. (i.e. sustained 4-5mbps download throughout test) and then the next test will go whacko & show 6 or 7mbps.
Speedtest think I'm at 12/512 but I don't know who's right or WHAT'S going on.
Something is definitely whacko, whacko in So Cal!!!! |

| reply to SocalUser Hello, I am a new customer in Socal/DC, Twentynine Palms. Since being wired for service last week, I have been having ongoing issues with slow internet browsing. My speed tests come back as normal, always achieving full RR Turbo speeds.
I have noticed that I am timing out to one of the internal UBR's while doing trace routes (results below).

Also for some reason, the DNS servers that I am being routed to are located in Denver. You would think TW would have local DNS servers in socal that function properly...
Any ideas as to what could be causing me to be time out to that fourth hop inside network, other than it being a head end problem?
Cheers,

| reply to sandwidth I use RR cable in SoCal and have noticed the same problem over the last week or so. Browsing seems fine during the day but is virtually impossible at night. This computer is on the wireless router and runs WinXP and has both IE and Firefox; the other house computer is wired to the cable and runs Vista; same symptoms everywhere.
Could the DNS registration be dropping or something like that? I don't know enough about how browsing works.
Has anyone gotten anything useful out of RR? |

| reply to SocalUser I just got off the phone with TW again, and pretty much did not make any progress. It seems like they all read the same rehearsed script and try to BS their way through the phone call.
I have a tech coming to the house tomorrow, so will keep you posted as to the outcome of the visit.
Also for the record, I am being routed to the following craptastic DNS servers:
76.85.229.110 76.85.229.111

| reply to SocalUser if i go to the netgear gateway, there is nowhere to enter the open dns addess numbers, unless i select static ip. is this ok to do??
i'm sorta green at this and don't want to mess it up, but RR is TERRIBLE. my speeds often show up in the 8mbs range, but actual browsing is a wretched, painful affair... |

| reply to SocalUser Same for a suburb of Kansas City. Second night in a row. Last night they had it on the "recording" - yes, TWC actually acknowledged the problem. I got right to a "support representative" who said, with some prompting, that they are having DNS issues. I mentioned that this is the second night. No response. I asked him if they were working on it. "Yes, we have technicians in the field working on this."
My 90-day "all the best" trial is up in two days, I'm going to cancel it tomorrow. The internet has been good for quite a while, but cable television service has been lousy for a long time, thanks to the "SVOD Follies." |

Please Please mr Verizon man....can you install FIOS now in my neighborhood? |

I have multiple customers with TW Internet service and would like to provide them with a definitive response from TW about this ongoing DNS problem. |

| Yes, it worked and I appreciate the info. I see where it came from now.
I think a lot of people that are having issues don't know what Twitter is nor would they trust a "random" site to confirm my conclusions about their problem.
Anyway, hopefully the situation is remedied RSN! It's frustrating to just keep telling them to call TW and jump through hoops to get someone on the other end who knows what is going on. |

Understood.
However the info is as good as the source who of course is genuine.

| reply to hobgoblin TWC doesn't have any credibility with me. I don't doubt that is is just a way to explain their crappy service.
The bigger the corporation gets, the worse the service gets......period.
Remember people, complain to the city/county where the service is and also the CPUC »www.cpuc.ca.gov/puc/forms/compla···ndex.htm
In Southern California we didn't have these types of problems with GTE, Verizon and Adelphia. As soon as TWC took over, it all went to sh1t. |

Adelphia had lots of DNS problems for a while and then it's networks were slammed with virus traffic so bad speeds tanked for days at a time. It's one of the reasons they started limiting traceroutes years ago.
GTE/Verizon bailed on their network after spending years stringing it along with minimal upgrades because they wanted out of the cable business. They wound up in a lawsuit over it and it was finally sold off to Adelphia. |
