Mele20 posted : Most users would never allow that RR redirection! Open DNS spies on you and you cannot stop it. It is MUCH preferred to get Level 3 DNS if you don't want RR's. Besides, RR has 249 DNS servers currently for those of us affected by the DDoS. For me, Open DNS is much slower than RR servers and are slower than Level 3 for me also.

DNS Benchmark you see in the screenshot is still in Alpha stage so not available yet to the general public. It is a SUPER little utility. I got it yesterday from the GRC DNS newsgroup. Steve Gibson has been working very hard to update his ancient DNS utility and this upgrade is wonderful. Now anytime surfing slows down at night I can easily check the performance of the DNS servers and see what ones besides RR's that are any good from my location. At this point though the utility is NOT finished so there could be something erroneous about what I showed in the screenshot.
--
"The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet.
bernardj posted : I have noticed what seems like the same problem but observed some different symptoms.

For some time now, I would guess two months, when I start an application, like a browser or an email client, it seems like the application is establishing a "session" with the DNS server, and you have to go through a sometimes long log on wait process. Once you get "connected ," it seems to work normally. Following inactivity, it seems like you sometimes lose your session, and have to logon again and face another long delay at the DNS server logon queue.

When my browser is working fine, and I start my email client, it seems like I go through another log on delay. It seems like the delay is longer for my email client. When I close an application and open it again, it seems like I have to go through the same log on process again. It seems like you establish a different DNS session for each application.

I don't recall from my limited past study of TCP/IP protocols that you log on to a DNS server.

I also recently tried a new version of Lynx, the pre-web text browser (reports of its demise are exaggerated), and got some strange messages. One RR screen told me that www.google.com did not exist. It seemed like Lynx was having difficulty connecting with the DNS server, not waiting long enough. Then suddenly it started working. Once it seemed to get a DNS session started, it worked OK.

I got some prompts for cookies for rr.com sites trying to contact google. I think they were something like wr23.rr.com. Why would a rr site want to set a cookie when I was going to google?

All this makes me wonder if TW is running some not completely debugged non standard DNS software that is setting rr cookies to trace people's browsing through the DNS server and is using it for functions beyond DNS. The idea that an ISP might trace user's browsing through DNS protocol and screw up their performance with overhead and delays in the DNS server raises numerous issues.

What I have seen is consistent througout the day, not just a night.

I have also observed what I think is a separate problem data disappearing in the TW routers.

IMHO all this sucks.
