PhoenixDown-- Wants FIOSPremium join:2003-06-08 Fresh Meadows, NY kudos:1 | [Thunderbird] Why the love for Thunderbird? I posted this as a comment in the Email Client for 2009 thread but perhaps that wasn't the best place for it.
At work, I've been using Outlook 2003 and (focusing on just the mail client aspects) its a pretty powerful tool with a lot of advanced features like advanced search and rules based filtering.
After hearing all the great things about Thunderbird, and considering how awesome Firefox is, I decided to give it a whirl. Its fast, very fast, but I was kind of surprised to find that you needed a plugin for basic searches.
So I was wondering... why did you pick Thunderbird? What needs did you have and how did the software meet it? -- »Left Align the Forum Column |

| I tried it, but the transition from Outlook to Thunderbird was not nearly as easy as from Explorer to Firefox. At least in Firefox it has the same functions as IE, and you add more as needed. Thunderbird out of the box just barely gets the mail.
I'm still using Outlook 2002. |

| reply to PhoenixDown It's free and very easy to configure for multiple email accounts. Also, migrating an existing Thunderbird installation to another computer is painlessly easy. Filter configuration is very intuitive and the filters work very well. Additional useful features are available with add-on extension too. I guess it's just about a perfect email client as far as I'm concerned.

 | reply to PhoenixDown Thunderbird provides thunder-mail.
Let's see Outlook do that. Ha! |
|
 | reply to PhoenixDown Because much as I loved Outlook, when I got my new pc it was going to cost me $99 to get the new version.
I found Thunderbird did everything I wanted and more. I've installed a few plugins, no big deal, and after 6 months of use I've had fewer issues with Thunderbird than I did with Outlook.
What's not to like? |

| reply to PhoenixDown Why? It's a continuation of netscape and mozilla mail client support. It does most of what you want without the bloat of outlook. It is standard conformant, whereas outlook seems to use proprietary microsoft "standards". And it works on unix/linux, not just on windows.

kwPremium join:2004-06-12 kudos:5 | reply to PhoenixDown I can't think of a good reason why I don't use Outlook. I have it installed, I just never set it up.
I think the main reason is the fact that I use POP for my mail, so if I ever switched none of those emails would be in Outlook. |

 | reply to PhoenixDown said by PhoenixDown:... why did you pick Thunderbird? What needs did you have and how did the software meet it? To get and send email--the only two features I actually "need".
(If you want more advanced feature than Thunderbird provides natively, just as with Firefox you have many, many add-ons to choose from... all free. Nowadays, though, I use it mostly for the IMAP "interface" into Gmail--makes a really good new message notifier, too. ) |

It might be more productive for all of us if you could tell us what you think Outlook does that Thunderbird doesn't.
I mean, if you prefer Outlook that's fine, but it's also possible you just don't know Thunderbird well enough to make an informed decision. |
