Huh? UE3 has been lackluster even by Epic's standards. It's not being used as much as UE2 was.
As for Quake not being successful - Both 1 and 2 were hugely successful games. Quake 2 is one of the highest rated games of all time.
Quake 3 Arena stands as a pinnacle moment in PC gaming. If it were not for the risk id took to make the game rely completely on the end-user having a 3D Accelerator - We would be in a completely different position in terms of 3D technology today.
The release of the original Quake was quite substantial as well. The decision to use polygon based rendering by Carmack is what brought us to the position we are in today.
Quake 2, while not nearly as important as either Wolf3D, Doom, Quake, and Q3A brought a number of very innovative features to the gaming world as well.
Every ID game released, including Doom 3, has been hugely innovative and has impacted the gaming industry by a substantial amount. The Quake 3 engine is still to this date the most licensed game engine in exsistance, and many more 'modern' engines use some part of the Quake 3 engines original code in their operation.
Honestly, to say that id is out of the game - Or has ever been, is the most ridiculous statement I have ever seen. Even when it 'appeared' that they weren't doing well after the release of Doom 3 they were still releasing great games like Doom RPG. They learned their lesson with Doom 3; Id is kicking serious ass releasing something like Quake Live. They are still releasing new games for the cellphone and iPhone platforms, and the upcomming release of RAGE will once again show that id does nothing but innovate. This is why they are -THE- name in gaming.
To summarize; If it were not for id, the gaming world would be absolutely and completely different from what it is today. |
