| Help please...I need high speed connection for business
I am a doctor and need to be able to pull up patient x-rays, charts, etc. from home. I have a farm which I can get very good DSL speeds at but do not live there. I am slowly building a house there. About 1.5 miles away I am renting a house. The house is about 350 - 500 feet from a major fiber optic line (I assume that is what it is) running up one of the interstates out of Atlanta. On networking maps showing major network hubs and the lines from city to city there is a bold yellow line that goes up the interstate about 20 miles beyond my location. DSL and cable are not available at the rental house but are all around it, I mean within 1/10 of a mile on several sides of the place so I suspect they just don't want to put it there for 2 houses (is a 450 acre tract of land). WWAN is available but I am a bit skeptical having used 3G which is a pain in the a$$ and unreliable even though I get a good signal. And BTW I am in the metro Atlanta area, I live up I-85 - I-985. Does anyone have any advice as to what I could do? I will be renting at least one year at which time I will move to the farm. Here is what I have found....
Covad...full dedicated T1 for $319 and they can have it up and running in 2 weeks or less. They will move it at no cost when I move. However, at the office I get a steady downstream 5.9 - 6.1 Mbps (AT&T DSL) and the 1.5 seems slow. I can go with a bonded T1 but it is almost double the above price. Man, for that price I could just go and buy the porno movies.....uh, I mean......(joking).
I have found a broadband transmitter for WWAN that supposedly will go up to 10 miles with an unobstructed path. This setup is about $3000. On the farm there are some high places perfect for a small tower and as mentioned before it is very close to the CO and I get very good DSL service there, or cable.
My wife likes to game online and DL anime so she uses a lot of bandwidth. I understand that the latency aspect is very favorable with the T1 but isn't there anything I can do to speed it up without spending a fortune? And if I do have to spend a fortune?
One more thing, I love to network and hook up servers, etc. We have almost 4TB of NAS. I have 4 desktops and 5 laptops all networked via linux and I like to experiment with different setups, configurations, OSes, etc. So if there is even an idea I could try it.. like bonding, etc. |
