[House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

Our electric bill just arrived, we are on Con-Ed now, and the bill is reduced by the lower generation rate!

Hope you all enrolled and can enjoy it too!

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

About 90% of the bill if I were using CL&P as my provider.

Edit: Converted the savings into a percentage to make it easier for anyone to estimate the savings of using Con-Ed as a provider.

Forgive me if I missed something in the past threads but is it 10% off the generation or 10% off your whole bill.

Forgive me if I missed something in the past threads but is it 10% off the generation or 10% off your whole bill.
The generation rate difference is more than 10%. Explanation below:

The CL&P generation rate is $0.12217 per KWH.

The Con-Ed generation rate is $0.1049 per KWH.

Unless my math / calculator are wrong, the Con-Ed generation rate is about 85% of the CL&P rate (.1049/.12217 ~ .85).

The CL&P generation charge seems to represent about 2/3 of a CL&P electric bill.

2/3 of a 15% savings should be around 10% (in rough numbers). My savings off the entire CL&P electric bill is about 10% compared the same bill when computed using the CL&P generation rate.

Anyone who uses CL&P (UI may be a different story, my experience is with CL&P) can get about a 10% savings off the entire bill by filling in an online Consolidated Edison form.

No social, or birth information had to be given. Con-Ed just wanted CL&P account info. My account was moved to Con-Ed a few weeks later.

My first discount for the early January effort just arrived in my CL&P bill. The result is a savings for me.

You have to select state CT before the form works correctly, the default is NY.

I went to the site but the drop down menu on the left for picking my utility gives me no option. I made sure all other fields are filled out...including the state. Wonder what gives?

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

If the online form doesn't work for you, the 800 number can be used to subscribe. I have a friend who preferred to call than enroll online.

I was using Levco / Dominion when enrolling with Con-Ed, initially the form seemed off, once I selected state "CT" from the drop down menu, a CL&P option appeared. At that point everything worked fine. The online help shows you where on your bill each piece of information is.

Do they force you to go with a standard rate or can you use a rate-time plan? I did the math for switching from UI to any other provider some 1 year ago and it was always more than the "net" I'm paying (I use most energy off-peak).

The Con-Ed rate is a flat $0.1049 per KWH. If your off peak rate is less, and you use most of your energy off peak, it won't work for you.

What is the on and off peak rate for UI?

Wow, I called to double check, you are correct.

Con-Ed only makes sense for CL&P customers, for UI it looks like Levco (which I think is now Dominion) makes the most sense.

Thanks for the information!

Contract terms ending on Feb 28 ,2010 11.50

Why would they offer me a rate of 11.50 when others are getting 10.49?

You can choose the type of electricity you purchase and the price structure.
Fixed Price Options
ConEdison Solutions' fixed price for the supply portion of your electricity bill is guaranteed
for the term of your agreement. Selecting a fixed price eliminates the risk of price
volatility and may allow you to better plan your expenses.

With Direct Energy it is 331.00kwh x 0.129900

Should I switch...it seems like the 11.5 is cheaper then the rate I am paying with Direct Energy? I have trouble reading these darn things.

Just got off the phone with Levco and they offered me 10.49..if I heard correctly. They are sending me the form so I can switch.

More news. I just checked out Public Power & Utility Inc. here:

Top of the page...they are offering 10.48

Price: Customer will receive electricity from Public Power & Utility, Inc at a floating generation rate. PP&U customers agree and understand that any potential savings will fluctuate with month-to-month market conditions. PP&U customers will maintain a not to exceed price of at least 5% below current CL&P or UI standard generation service rates. See home page for current rates.

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

I think Co-Ed is offering .1049 for CL&P customers and .1150 for UI customers, based on what has been discovered in this thread.

If Levco / Dominion is matching the .1049 rate, go for it!

I have CL&P and I am just getting around to going to the on-line form. Con-Ed is offering 11.5, my current rate is $0.122170. So, there is still a small savings.

Question....Do the Con-Ed charges appear on the same bill as the CL&P charges?

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

If Con-Ed is offering $.115 it would be better to call Levco and see if they will match $.1049. The Con-Ed charges appear on my CL&P bill with the CL&P charges.

If Con-Ed were offering only $.1150 then I'd go for another provider. If Levco won't match $.1049, try »www.ppandu.com/esg/ they claim to provide at $.1048. I am less familiar with them, but another poster in this thread seems to report favorably about them (see post by Sky King).

The $.1049 rate has had a significant impact on my electric bill. I don't think $.1150 would make much of a change.

My rate is 11.45/14.96 cents/kWh for generation. Coned offered 11.5 flat so it's tempting... will also look into alternate providers...

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

You'll save money with the $0.1049 Con-Ed rate over your current plan. $0.1145 is almost 10% more than the Con-Ed rate. The reduction in you bill may be less than for others, but it will still be a reduction. All that is needed is to fill out an online form. The $0.1049 rate is guaranteed through the end of 2009, and you can cancel or move to another provider at any time. There is no contract, no lock-in.

One thing to note - Public Power & Utility offers a floating rate which can (and almost certainly will) go up based on how much UI/CL&P charge (UI has just increased rates). Levco offers a fixed rate guaranteed for 1 year.

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

As long as Public Power's rates stay lower then the other suppliers it is still a good deal. They have a historical rates chart at their site. Granted it is for a short period but that is the good thing about not having a contract, a person can change providers. A quote from their website below:

"Price: Customer will receive electricity from Public Power & Utility, Inc at a floating generation rate. PP&U customers agree and understand that any potential savings will fluctuate with month-to-month market conditions. PP&U customers will maintain a not to exceed price of at least 5% below current CL&P or UI standard generation service rates. See home page for current rates."

Seems to me it is like a said above, they will consistently be priced below the other suppliers listed above. Believe me, I do not have a "dog" in this fight, I will always try to go with the cheapest and if that if not Public Power...bye bye. I have no personal experience with the company and I am making my decision strictly on price. Good luck on everyone's energy search. I am trying to save in all areas, not just on energy. Cannot wait to retire and move south. I will save over 4,000 a year on property taxes alone. That is big bucks when living on a fixed income. A person can make it on as little as 2,000 per month in some places I have researched.

I just noticed on this month's CL&P bill that the "monthly service charge" went up a buck to $16...and that the "off peak" rate is up to 11.32c...

If you are paying 11.32c off peak, and I'm paying 10.49c regardless of time, guess who is paying less for the same amount of electricity.

You may wish to see which provider offers the lowest rate. I don't believe any of the alternative electric providers offer peak and off peak rates.

Uhhh, hmmm....that's a toughie....

Couple things, though: one, I contracted to retain the multi-rate for at least a year (I have until late Spring); and two, I actually come out ahead since I have a PV array that generates most of its power - at least half of all we use - during the day at the higher rate (14.8c, I think?)

But, absent that, you're absolutely correct that switching to another provider would be much better. - GA

Which web page did you go to? The Con-Ed web page is secure, and is run by Consolidated Edison of New York. Which is a large utility.

The Con-Ed page is here - »https://www.conedsolutions.com/CES_Enroll/ note you have to change the state to CT (the default is NY) to get instructions for Connecticut customers.

Others have suggested using »www.ppandu.com/esg/ which doesn't seem secure, and is a service I would not provide any personal information to.

Which site are you complaining about the Con-Ed site? Which I suggested. Or the Public Power and Utility site? Which I have not suggested.

If you're unhappy with ConEd (just curious) what would you have to do to get switched back to CLP?

Also, how does this work exactly? Why does CLP allow ConEd to undercut their prices while using their infrastructure?

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

Oh great, the whole concept of breaking generation from delivery was to give us choice. Instead it has given us the highest cost for electricity in the nation.

Now the folks who created this disaster want to nuke it again, and trap us with higher rates without any possible escape.

Do our representatives run on a ticket against voters? I don't know how some of them get elected.

Edit: I suspect the state wants to trap customers into "green" power mandates which will make electricity produced in Connecticut very expensive even from where it is today.

Here is a link to the N.Y. Times story about deregulation and how it was supposed to help us back in 1998 - »www.nytimes.com/1998/04/16/nyreg···ion.html

From the link - ''We can't become a state that stands like an ostrich with our head in the sand while our sister states become competitive,'' Representative Moira K. Lyons, the House Democratic Majority Leader, said, adding that with the third-highest rates in the nation, Connecticut could only benefit from deregulation. Still, many states have balked at passing such legislation, and the Connecticut bill met resistance from some lawmakers who said they felt it included too many handouts to the state's two electric utilities, Northeast Utilities and United Illuminating.

Re: [House&Home] Electric bill arrived and it looks great!

My advice to anyone using an alternate electric provider in Connecticut is to check your rate at the beginning of the new year (2010). Some companies offer almost the same rate as incumbent suppliers after the first years discount.

If that happens, switch asap.
