pandora I am sure the site you endorse is fine I checked it out. I guess I should have been more clear I was commenting on Colbyc and the site he had talked about and to let others know the site looks a bit sketchy.

If you're unhappy with ConEd (just curious) what would you have to do to get switched back to CLP?

Also, how does this work exactly? Why does CLP allow ConEd to undercut their prices while using their infrastructure?

If you don't like ConEd you can call CL&P to switch back. You'll be back at the old rate within a month.

CL&P has to permit alternative energy providers by state law. CL&P also has to provide power if they fail for any reason to provide it.

In practice, with almost 2 years on alternative energy suppliers in Connecticut there is absolutely no difference between CL&P or an alternate energy supplier. The only change is a lower monthly bill.

Why would you be unhappy with a provider? Your electricity still comes through the same wires and from the same "pool" of electricity, you only get charged the lower rate because you use your "part" from that comes from the alternate provider. Chances are your electricity is still coming from CL&P only they count what you use towards the part they buy from ConEd.

Hi,
Was $.1098 the price from the ConEd site? Are you using CL&P or UI? The last time I looked (months ago) the price from ConEd for CL&P was $.1049 ... I winder if the price has gone up? Supposedly it's locked in until the end of the year.

For UI customers, I think Dominion was less expensive (if I recall correctly). There was discussion of CL&P vs UI rates in one of these threads.

No matter which alternate energy provider you use, they are almost always less expensive than CL&P or UI.

The price may have gone up, fortunately for everyone who locked in at the lower price it's good through the end of 2009.

You may want to check out Dominion (formerly Levco) and see if they have a better offer.

Oh great, the whole concept of breaking generation from delivery was to give us choice. Instead it has given us the highest cost for electricity in the nation.

Now the folks who created this disaster want to nuke it again, and trap us with higher rates without any possible escape.

Do our representatives run on a ticket against voters? I don't know how some of them get elected.

Edit: I suspect the state wants to trap customers into "green" power mandates which will make electricity produced in Connecticut very expensive even from where it is today.

Here is a link to the N.Y. Times story about deregulation and how it was supposed to help us back in 1998 - »www.nytimes.com/1998/04/16/nyreg···ion.html

From the link - ''We can't become a state that stands like an ostrich with our head in the sand while our sister states become competitive,'' Representative Moira K. Lyons, the House Democratic Majority Leader, said, adding that with the third-highest rates in the nation, Connecticut could only benefit from deregulation. Still, many states have balked at passing such legislation, and the Connecticut bill met resistance from some lawmakers who said they felt it included too many handouts to the state's two electric utilities, Northeast Utilities and United Illuminating.

I guess I should check to see if my order went from "pending" to "approved".

ok, just got my first bill using Dominion for generation services. Dominion rate is 0.104/kwh vs CL&P at 0.12217/kwh (that's what I paid last month). This is a 14.9% saving for generation and this month work out to be a 10.4% saving overall ($22.23)

My advice to anyone using an alternate electric provider in Connecticut is to check your rate at the beginning of the new year (2010). Some companies offer almost the same rate as incumbent suppliers after the first years discount.

If that happens, switch asap.

Hello. I currently have ConEd for $.1049. Today, in the mail I got from Levco an offer for $.1030 until December 31, 2009. If I switch, does ConEd charge cancellation fee or do I have to keep ConEd for 1 year, I signed up in Jan or Feb of this year from the ConEd site. Thanks

Nope, no cancellation fee. All you'll wind up with is a lower bill.

You should be switched. It usually takes a cycle or two. I switched in mid-January and was moved by late February.

Call Con-Ed and check that the paperwork wasn't lost.

Same thing here. I switched on 4/24 and the bill has not yet reflected the switch.
