It can take up to two months. It depends on where in the cycle you put in. There's an email they sent you, there is a link/contact info in there. You might want to check it out with ConEd.

| reply to pandora OK. Just called Con-Ed. I gotta tell you that I was speaking to a live person in 12 seconds! They say they have a record of it and that it went into effect on June 5. My July bill should have the change. I expect that on or about July 10.
A live person in 12 seconds! My first impression of Con-Ed has them at a 10.

| I called Con-Ed once for myself, and once when helping a friend sign up. Both times we had a live American on the phone in seconds. Not only were they easy to understand, but the Con-Ed folks were very helpful too! -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| Reliable? It's not like if they go bankrupt or close up shop that your power will suddenly go off.
FYI - Got my July bill and the switch took place. Nice to see that little bar for generation rate actually go down for once. -- Rich. My Website |

Why do you care? You still get electricity through UI, only UI charges you their own rate or the rate for Levco. Electricity comes through the same wires as for your neighbors who have UI as supplier |

| reply to pandora FWIW: I checked into Public Power and Utility.
The iloweredmyelectricbill.com site sounded positively scammy and piqued my curiosity. The registration info for the domain was a PO box in Vancouver, WA.
Fortunately for them [I was seriously considering a chat with the AG's office], they have another domain name: ppandu.com. Same retro-look website, better registration info. The registration info for ppandu.com is available through GoDaddy if anyone wants to check. The registrant is an electrical contractor from New Milford. That looks legit, as far as I can tell. I'm assuming it's a mom-and-pop operation, hence the 'give me a call'.
As I said, take the info for what it's worth. |

| I've never advocated or really trusted Public Power and Utility or ppandu.com. The two corporations I have done business with and suggested people look into are Levco (part of Dominion) and Con-Ed.
I had Con-Ed earlier this year (in January), but in April got a better offer from Levco (Dominion) and am now with Dominion. The locked in lower rate I'm currently on from Levco is good through the end of 2010. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| reply to DrStrange For what it's worth, I am using Public Power and Utility, and have for the past couple of years. I grew up in New Milford and am familiar with the owner of this company. It is most definitely legitimate, it is just that he started it as a side venture. There were articles about them in the local papers a few years back (Republican American and News Times come to mind). I do not work for them or have anything to gain, I just thought I would pass along my knowledge of the company. You really have nothing to lose with any alternative supplier! |

| reply to pandora We're currently on Dominion now, but since the inlaws are living with us and cooking a lot more on electric range, this month's bill was $514. Ouch! We had briefly dipped under $500 last month with an austere living situation, but it seems one can't cook at home to save money--the electricity kills the savings on eating out. |

| We use gas (propane) on our cook top and dryer. When we first started to use the propane dryer we saved about $50-$60 a month on the electric bill. Our propane bill is about $13 a month. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| There is no way I'll allow gas in this house. In fact, if I were an insurance company, I would refuse to write a policy for any building that is gas-equipped.
Yes, I know it's safe, most of the time, but that one time something goes wrong, it's all over, baby.

the electricity kills the savings on eating out. That's not possible. Even if you have a big-ass range and using all of the burners and the stove at the same time, that's 40Ax240V=8.8kWh or merely $2/h - and that's only until the burners or stove reach the set temperature. 1.5hrs of full blast cooking every day would only account for $100/month maximum. If you have a $500+ bill then something is very, very wrong in your house. I have a server running 24/7, dehumidifier 8h/day, pool pump about 8h/day, keep the A/C to 75 or below and last month's bill was $250. |

| Not too long ago, I was talking with a neighbor and the topic of high electric bills came up. Turns out I'm not in a unique situation. Their bill was in the $500 too.
Going back ten years, there WERE a lot of things wrong here, including a well pump that was running 24/7 because of a rusted through pipe down at the bottom of the well, a 175W mercury vapour lamp running all night on a photoelectric eye, using a very large stereo system 10-12 hours a day for background music (four Hafler 500s and a Phase-Linear D500 idling all day), heavy use of a/c in summer and electric space heaters in winter. Bill? Around $80 in the 1990s. After 2001, it doubled and I started switching to CFL lights, turned off the outdoor merc lamp, bought a smaller mag field amp and stopped using the big system for background music, stopped using so much a/c, and stopped using space heaters. During 2001 and on, my PC went from a PII-400 to an overclocked Athlon 1333. In 2003, I added an Athlon XP-based editing workstation. In 2007, I upgraded to a quad core. In 2008, I upgraded the other machine to a quad core. I also have MIDI gear that is constantly powered on (samples loaded). I have a 3KVa UPS that's fully-loaded. There is also an Athlon 1333 web server on that UPS. So that's close to 3KVa running 24/7. But now that the inlaws are living with us, the bill rose about $35 over the month prior. Cooking IS expensive. For $1.50, I can get a jumbo hot dog and a soda at Costco. We're starting to use the outdoor gas grill now, because the wife's getting scared of the rapid rise in bills with a household of five. Cooking time is about an hour, 3 times a day. Maybe the Keurig K-cup coffee brewing systems is adding to that as well. We do use a considerable amount of electricity, even if you omit the clothes dryer useage, which is also up. 6-7 loads a week now. I long for the early 60's when we did anything we wanted with electricity and the bill was $6. Energy has just become so large a percentage of family budget now, whereas 45years ago it was right behind groceries. |

| We got the latest electric bill in Saturday's mail. The wife went ballistic. It was $554.24. This was from running the a/c intermittently, and running our home theater projector and sound system 4-5 hours per weekend. I'm just waiting for the DEA to show up, suspecting of us running a pot growing operation. ;-\ Oh well, a $54 bump in the bill due to home theater usage I suppose isn't too bad, combined with a/c usage. But I do think it's time to replace the a/c units which are 1984 models with something more modern. I need something MUCH quieter. The Emerson Quiet Kool units are anything BUT quiet. They're about 82dB when the compressor is running. I may need something bigger than the 18,000BTU unit cooling the theater/studio space. It's 8,000 cu ft of air space and the equipment heat output overpowers that little a/c unit. It's enough to counter the three computer systems, but when the sound system and projector are running, it doesn't stand a chance of keeping up. I guess electricity is just no longer a cheap and forgettable commodity. It's now a major investment and ongoing expense. I sure miss the $6/month electric bills of the 1960s... |

1 edit | reply to pandora Ummmm.. you're wasting $400/mo in electricity on your gear (3kW*24h*30days=2160kWh) and you're complaining about the $15/month cost of cooking and the coffeemaker???? Are you serious???? A load of clothes will eat some 3kWh - so that's $20/mo... again virtually nothing compared to your gear... |
