Our town zoning won't allow wind turbines or ANY structure over 18'. In fact, when I was at Radio Shack once, a customer was buying a sat dish and the clerk asked what town the customer was in. I asked him why he wanted to know that and he said they're not allowed to sell sat dishes to residents of certain towns where zoning prohibs the 'unsightly' dishes. Go figure...

Oh well, a $54 bump in the bill due to home theater usage I suppose isn't too bad, combined with a/c usage. But I do think it's time to replace the a/c units which are 1984 models with something more modern. I need something MUCH quieter. The Emerson Quiet Kool units are anything BUT quiet. They're about 82dB when the compressor is running. I may need something bigger than the 18,000BTU unit cooling the theater/studio space. It's 8,000 cu ft of air space and the equipment heat output overpowers that little a/c unit. It's enough to counter the three computer systems, but when the sound system and projector are running, it doesn't stand a chance of keeping up.
I guess electricity is just no longer a cheap and forgettable commodity. It's now a major investment and ongoing expense. Turns out I'm not in a unique situation. Their bill was in the $500 too.

Going back ten years, there WERE a lot of things wrong here, including a well pump that was running 24/7 because of a rusted through pipe down at the bottom of the well, a 175W mercury vapour lamp running all night on a photoelectric eye, using a very large stereo system 10-12 hours a day for background music (four Hafler 500s and a Phase-Linear D500 idling all day), heavy use of a/c in summer and electric space heaters in winter. Bill? Around $80 in the 1990s.
After 2001, it doubled and I started switching to CFL lights, turned off the outdoor merc lamp, bought a smaller mag field amp and stopped using the big system for background music, stopped using so much a/c, and stopped using space heaters.
During 2001 and on, my PC went from a PII-400 to an overclocked Athlon 1333. In 2003, I added an Athlon XP-based editing workstation. In 2007, I upgraded to a quad core. In 2008, I upgraded the other machine to a quad core.
I also have MIDI gear that is constantly powered on (samples loaded). I have a 3KVa UPS that's fully-loaded. There is also an Athlon 1333 web server on that UPS. So that's close to 3KVa running 24/7.
But now that the inlaws are living with us, the bill rose about $35 over the month prior.
Cooking IS expensive. For $1.50, I can get a jumbo hot dog and a soda at Costco. We're starting to use the outdoor gas grill now, because the wife's getting scared of the rapid rise in bills with a household of five.
Cooking time is about an hour, 3 times a day. Maybe the Keurig K-cup coffee brewing systems is adding to that as well. We do use a considerable amount of electricity, even if you omit the clothes dryer useage, which is also up. 6-7 loads a week now.
I long for the early 60's when we did anything we wanted with electricity and the bill was $6. Even if you have a big-ass range and using all of the burners and the stove at the same time, that's 40Ax240V=8.8kWh or merely $2/h - and that's only until the burners or stove reach the set temperature. 1.5hrs of full blast cooking every day would only account for $100/month maximum.

Why do you care? You still get electricity through UI, only UI charges you their own rate or the rate for Levco. Your electricity still comes through the same wires and from the same "pool" of electricity, you only get charged the lower rate because you use your "part" from that comes from the alternate provider. CL&P has to permit alternative energy providers by state law. CL&P also has to provide power if they fail for any reason to provide it.

In practice, with almost 2 years on alternative energy suppliers in Connecticut there is absolutely no difference between CL&P or an alternate energy supplier. The only change is a lower monthly bill.

I've never suggested that website. It isn't secure, and I'm not certain who those people are.

Last year and this year, I have recommended Dominion (formerly Levco) this year I have also recommended Con-Ed.

Which web page did you go to? The Con-Ed web page is secure, and is run by Consolidated Edison of New York. Which is a large utility.

Others have suggested using »www.ppandu.com/esg/ which doesn't seem secure, and is a service I would not provide any personal information to.

Which site are you complaining about the Con-Ed site? Which I suggested. Or the Public Power and Utility site? Which I have not suggested.

Uhhh, hmmm....that's a toughie....

Couple things, though: one, I contracted to retain the multi-rate for at least a year (I have until late Spring); and two, I actually come out ahead since I have a PV array that generates most of its power - at least half of all we use - during the day at the higher rate (14.8c, I think?)

The $.1049 rate has had a significant impact on my electric bill. I don't think $.1150 would make much of a change.

I was using Levco / Dominion when enrolling with Con-Ed, initially the form seemed off, once I selected state "CT" from the drop down menu, a CL&P option appeared. At that point everything worked fine. The online help shows you where on your bill each piece of information is.

Wow, I called to double check, you are correct.

Con-Ed only makes sense for CL&P customers, for UI it looks like Levco (which I think is now Dominion) makes the most sense.

The generation rate difference is more than 10%. Explanation below:

The CL&P generation rate is $0.12217 per KWH.

The Con-Ed generation rate is $0.1049 per KWH.

Unless my math / calculator are wrong, the Con-Ed generation rate is about 85% of the CL&P rate (.1049/.12217 ~ .85).

The CL&P generation charge seems to represent about 2/3 of a CL&P electric bill.

2/3 of a 15% savings should be around 10% (in rough numbers). My savings off the entire CL&P electric bill is about 10% compared the same bill when computed using the CL&P generation rate.

Anyone who uses CL&P (UI may be a different story, my experience is with CL&P) can get about a 10% savings off the entire bill by filling in an online Consolidated Edison form.

No social, or birth information had to be given. Con-Ed just wanted CL&P account info. My account was moved to Con-Ed a few weeks later.

My first discount for the early January effort just arrived in my CL&P bill. The result is a savings for me.
