MacBook Question 'red light in headphone jack'

My daughter sent me this e-mail this morning

"will you please find out what it means when there is a red light on
inside the hole where my headphones go into my computer."
What is the answer?
Thanks!

That is the optical part of the jack. Optical uses light to travel.

This means that the jack is in digital audio mode. There is a metal prong in the jack and sometimes it can be bent, causing the digital audio to be turned on when it shouldn't be.

If she rapidly inserts and removes a headphone plug in the jack and it doesn't resolve the issue, she needs a new logic board.

Is it bad if it's turned on?

It just means that it's sending the audio output through the headphone jack and no sound through the internal speakers.

Red light anywhere means video recording. I'm sorry to inform you, but she is being watched.

Is she booted into xp via bootcamp? My unibody mac book pro always has the red light in the headphone jack while booted into xp via bootcamp.

If the sound isn't working.. you can fix this easily with a toothpick.

In the headphone jack or in the ear?
