Re: [Business] Buying a DOCSIS 3 Compliant Cable Modem

I'm not sure I see the value in that.
Rather then expending time/money/energy on making the 6120 act like a 5120 (sort of like buying a truck with a big V-8 and then cutting 7 of the sparkplug wires)
when with less effort/time/money you could write a generic "I'm a 6120, but I only run in D2 mode"
or what's really needed, "I'm a 6120,running in D3 backward compatible mode, limited to XXX/xxx speeds"
But any given cable provider stiil needs to be sure that mode will work on their system before they go with a system wide release.

I guess there are several options as to what Motorola could have done.

Re: Buying a DOCSIS 3 Compliant Cable Modem

Looks like the SB6120 is slowly becoming available in retail markets... you can even find it in some online stores via google shopping, and saw some "OEM boxed" SB6120's in a local retail store...

That's right, the Marie Antoinette model.

but what if I want a Texas model?
(More ram, larger flash, 10gig copper chipset for the ethernet side, redundant powersupplies, a full function web interface) well then what do I do?

Oh, you want the model with the McCain chipset?

Ah, there will be a slight delay in it's introduction.

ORDER!

edit: Also call up Comcast and make sure they will allow this to run on there network as a customer owned modem. Also make sure D3 is in your area, if it's not I wouldn't think this modem would be authorized to run in a area without D3 released. This is what I THINK so call up Comcast and ask them.

It is compatible with DOCSIS 2.0, so why wouldn't Comcast allow it to be used in a non-D3 area ? It's also on their list of compatible modems, with no *

Read back in this thread a bit, some companies/ or even some areas of ComCast may not have a config file for it, though all of comcast should have it soon.
Until a proper config file is available in YOUR area, it will not register.

I picked it up at Frys, came home, called Comcast, and was online in 5 minutes. I am in a non D3 part of Atlanta. They did ask for the model number, but they never said anything after that. Proceeded to provision it while on phone.

Working fine, other than it takes longer to sync to the network.

Understood. One can only assume if it is listed as a compatible device by Comcast, without any * indicating 'select areas', then one should be good to go.

As I said all areas soon, at worst it sits in your closet for a few weeks/ months, (during that time the price MAY plummet). If you really want it, buy it now.

I bought a 6120 at Fry's last week and it has worked great for four days and counting in Berkeley, CA.

Berkeley is not D3 yet, we are close, but Comcast provisioned the 6120 over the phone, no problem or issues. Configuration file loaded was for a SB6120.

Faster Blast and Powerboost speeds than the 5120 I replaced. Signal/noise is improved according to the modem. Hopefully, I am ready for Ultra when available without a tech visit. NO channel bonding yet without D3, of course.

My residential dynamic Comcast IP didn't change when I switched modems. That surprised me.

Model Name: SB6120
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB6120-1.0.1.3-SCM00-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot 1.0.0.4m1
Hardware Version: 1.0
Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Firmware Build Time: Dec 8 2008 15:37:58

Anyone know of a place near Denver to get one of these bad boys? I have a friend or two in Austin who could probably get to a Fry's down there but it'd be nice to grab one myself. I'd go online, but looks like everyone selling the darned things is positively fly-by-night!

No one in Denver has them right now. Best Buy and Micro Center would be the only places locally, but none have any. Best Buy also took their SB6120 off their site which is strange...
