Let me guess, you've got a lower-ish SNR. I had the exact same problem, for nearly two years, because I live in an apartment building, which are notorious for wiring issues. The SB5120 uses a different chipset than the other surfboard modems, and doesn't work well with a poor signal. My SNR was in the 34-35dB range, which is on the low side for QAM256. I replaced the SB5120 with an SB5101, and now my SNR doesn't drop below 37.5db even in the worst of weather, and my problem has vanished.

Naturally, there are other things that could cause your problem, but I've noticed a lot of people have this same problem with the SB5120, where they randomly drop for a few seconds.
