....

I cut off my internet at home and now just use it at work. But when it comes to having internet or not, I think not is probably better than dial-up. Web pages are too big today to get much enjoyment from dial-up. I suppose email would still work ok.

The cost of the pots line to carry the dial-up would make stand alone cable or DSL more attractive for most, I'd think.

^^I've gotta agree with that^^. Anytime I roll down to my inlaw's farm where they only have dial-up, I find that I only get angry and frustrated trying to load even the simplest pages. Checking e-mail is a chore, and trying to buy anything or do even a small amount of research is all but impossible. No one is going back to 100 MB hard drives and no one is going back to dial-up if they have reasonable access to cable or DSL.

Indeed, but I guarantee that if you had DSL or Cable for any length of time, you'd never go back. Now that they have airplanes, no one takes a horse & buggy from New York to L.A.

That is one of the reasons to design with proper HTML/XHTML, not just for the blind, but to give alteratives to people who wish to limit media downloads, Javascript. So many websites now rely on broadband with all the bells & whistles, but the underlying framework should allow a user to visit with images turned off, even with Lynx.

Totally agree, just try going to Espn.com on dialup.

Coming from Mishawaka/Northeast Indiana area, you should know that's not true. There's still lots of horse and buggies being driven around by the Amish. Sure they may not take them from New York to LA, but that doesn't mean that a dial-up user never uses broadband either.

Personally, some form of high-speed internet would probably be the LAST "luxury" I get rid of. If it came down to eating, having a roof over my head, etc and broadband, sure broadband would go. But anymore and it's almost as much of a "necessity" as gas and electric.

I wouldn't go back to dial-up no matter what. I'd use wireless cell access before I'd use dial-up. But I can't see dropping my cable connection at 12/2 mbps for $42.95 a month for either dial-up or a wireless data plan.

Besides my Kindle 2 can access the Internet while traveling by using the included Sprint's 3G network for no additional monthly cost at all after purchasing the Kindle.

If you have to access the internet thru dial-up or wireless access, then you need to access all the web sites designed to be used on slower small screen devices. I have a web page setup that can link to all those sites:
