Surfboard or Scientific Atlanta?

I got a tech coming tomorrow to replace my modem, i'm thinking of asking for a surfboard instead of a SA if they have any. Does anyone know which is better/worse? I've been through 2 or 3 SA's now that eventually start dropping packets or constantly rebooting. Do the surfboards support both Boost and VoIP? and which model numbers should i be looking at getting?

The Motorola SBV5120/SBV5121 series supports both BOOST and OV.

I have an SBV5120 myself, and have had NO problems at all with it... Also, The Moto's Diagnostic Webpages are NOT Disabled by Default (unlike the SA modems), which makes Troubleshooting any connection issues much easier...

If you can get a Moto, I'd Highly recommend it.

I have a SURFboard SBV5222 and it also works great. Boost and Optimum Voice enabled here.

I think the difference is like Ford and Chevy. Everyone has a preference. Amongst the techs the Motorola is the favorite. Most will swap out a Webstar any chance they get.

There is a problem going on with OV where it rings a half ring instead of a full ring. This only happens on the Motorola and not the Webstar.

Whatever modem you get, make sure it's brand new in a cardboard box, and not a plastic baggie.

A year ago, after an OV install I went through three separate Webstar modems (all refurbished) until OOL finally brought the Motorola SBV5121xm.

I had OV problems galore. One ring than nothing, no dial tone, echo, inability to use *82 and other * codes and others.

To be fair, I'm sure that if I had received a brand new Webstar, it would work just as well.

I prefer Motorola modems. We have an SBv5121xm at home, an SBv5120 in Brooklyn and an SBv5220 in the office; all Motorola.

* Caveat: This was more than a year ago. *

It wouldn't hurt, but I don't think he should flatout refuse a replacement modem if it's not brand new. My "plastic baggie" SB5100 I got when BOOST was announced has been running nonstop, 24/7 since then without any problems.

i recall the tech saying last time that the surfboards he had were all used and only the SA's were new. hope the one coming today has some new surfboards.

I remember having a SBv4120 or something a few years back and it worked flawlessly.

anyone know the difference between the SBV5120 and SBV5220 and such? i can't seem to find much info comparing the two.

SBV5220 has slot for battery backup inside the modem. SBV5120 battery backup attaches outside of it.

You get whatever the guy has on the truck at that point in time.

If you want something else, you'd have to go to a walk in center, and maybe they'll have another model for you.

Of course! My post is probably biased by two or three faulty Webstars. I'm sure if a modem is properly refurbished, there's little difference to a brand new one.

Thanks for bringing this up; you're absolutely right.

I have been through both brands. Everytime I swapped modems first when I had a problem to rule out modem issues (next Walkin center is close and never a line) I ended up with a different Brand (going from Motorola to Webstar to Motoral). In neither case was the modem the issue. When everything works fine I see no difference between both.

I haven't seen a modem in the box in years. I think some of them are new but just packaged in bags ( at least the new Motorolas seem new ).

I don't like to say refurbished because that makes people think they are looked at in some way before going back into the field. I just call them USED.

When I exchanged my old modem (an SB4100) at the Norwalk Walk-In Center (to upgrade to 15/2 service), I received an SB5100 in a Plastic Bag... It looked like new, and it worked flawlessly.
I eventually added OV (on a Triple-Play promotion), and the Installer brought in a SBV5120 (Also in a Plastic Bag)... I've had Absolutely No Problems at all with it so far...

seems my "webstar" DPX2203 is slower than my old scientific atlanta 2203C ive been getting around 15-19 on this one and i was consistently getting 25 on the old one. the tech said it could just be the packet loss issue i've had recently but i don't know... anyone else have crappy performance on the webstars?

I'm looking at dennismurphy's Speedtest.Net results and his download is faster than mine. Mine displays 21100 kb/s on the download (upload about the same) on the same server (live in NJ as well). I too have Boost and Optimum Voice enabled but on a SURFBoard SBV5120. Hmm, any ideas? Thanks.

If it is a Motorola then a quick way to see if it is new or refurbished/used is to look at the log. If it shows old entries then you have been given a modem that someone else had and returned. With a WebStar you need to use DOCSIS (with the -vvv parm) to see the log entries since that modem has its displays crippled.

hmm i may have been wrong about the speed drop with the modem change. the NYC speedtest.net server has just been slow, i'm getting like 26-27 with the NJ ones.
