| I'm done with Comodo FW Comodo FW was just purring along until an update about a month ago. So much got borked I had to uninstall Comodo. Find all the quick launch icons it deleted and/or moved and reinstall Comodo. That was just for starters. I don't really remember all the other stuff I had to fix. It just finished another update and borked some more stuff. It had become so annoying anyway that it reminded me of Vista's UAC. I had just about everything except the basic firewall disabled anyway. Another good product gone bad because they try to add so much stuff it becomes bloatware. Uninstalled, cleaned out all the stuff left behind in the registry and adios Comodo. I'm sticking a fork in you. You're done AFAIC. -- Only when the heart is changed, will the old become the new.

 | reply to Nanoprobe That's the problem with a lot of these apps, they just become so complicated that eventually they just kinda self-destruct. It's too much for me.... |

I have had zero problems with it personally. I am on XP though. It seems a whole lot of people are having trouble with the Vista version. I do think they are trying to add to much way to fast. This stuff does not happen over night and they need to realize that. |

Doctor FourMy other vehicle is a TARDISPremium join:2000-09-05 Dallas, TX | reply to Nanoprobe I've got the 3.5.57173.439 version of it, which includes their AV. I have had no trouble with it whatsoever on my current built PC. The previous one had the firewall only, and I was using Avast. There was one occasion where it forgot all of its settings after an update.
But I do agree on one thing - the constant prompts from Defense+ (their version of HIPS) can be annoying at times when installing or upgrading software. I will usually just put it into installation mode rather than allow each of them individually (which can get tedious when an installer has to make many registry modifications/additions.) -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

| reply to Nanoprobe I have had no problems with Comodo FW latest version running on 4 computers abet not Vista. Comodo will sort it out for Vista users not unlike any other software vendor creating programs for an OS.
I set Comodo up in training mode for a few days and let it learn which seems to work the best. YMMV -- "One good conspiracy theory deserves another." |

SentinelPremium join:2001-02-07 Florida kudos:1 | I am not impressed with Comodo either. I am still using Kerio 2.1.5 on my XP machines.
Can anyone tell me what was the last version of Comodo that was stand alone firewall? I think that version did MD5 signature checking as well. Does anyone know by any chance? |

I think it was Version 2.4.18.184. That's what I'm using on my WinXP. No, it was 3.0.25.378. Both versions 2.4 and 3.0 are available at FileHippo »www.filehippo.com/download_comodo/ (3.0 uses D+ which I consider an essential component of Comodo's firewall.)
FWIW, I test drove Online Armor and I'm not willing to try it again. Blue screen crashes are not something I'm willing to go through again. I'll stay with Comodo 3.5 forever before doing that again... |

I'll stay with Comodo 3.5 forever before doing that again... Which goes miles confirming that some software, for whatever reason, doesn't like some computers. Who knows?
My intent wasn't to deflect this discussion towards a "better than" direction. As others have said, regarding the creeping bloat some tools have exhibited over the years, I too was very pleased with the old ZA. I used Comodo for some time too, before it began to .. swell.
It wasn't very long ago, having used Online Armor and Kerio before it, that I was curious enough to take another look at Comodo and Outpost. Both, no doubt, fine tools.
Outpost, like OA for you, doesn't like my computer .. and, Comodo wasn't anything like I'd remembered using earlier. Very, very "busy". I didn't spend much time trying to calm it either.
From earlier in this thread .. I'd thought to mention that, to me, OA is built solid, like a tank. It's functioning here is, has been, completely flawless. I consider it to be one of the finest (if not the finest) software firewalls currently available.
I run admin. And, I like being able to designate programs I choose to "run safer" mirror the limitations of running LU. -- Eagles may soar .. but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. |
