Avast questionConsidering installing Avast on in laws computer. To avoid false positives, is it better to run Avast's default settings, standard versus high detection? |

Better how? Detection rate?
If you don't want tons of popup alerts adjust accordingly. I don't use anything other than the normal scanner....I have other apps to do the other things, but, in your case you may want avast to do all so no other app is needed. |

I have installed it "default" to many systems and it seems to be working well for everyone. I have my personal one set to custom.
Setting it high on everything will make them answer prompts often. I'd leave it at default for someone that isn't an expert. |

It just shows it's scanning, so no worry. |

OK. It won't constantly scan though, unless there is traffic to the HD. Mine will scan, then stop, on loading a web page, or while checking email. Other than that, it's still. |

If so, I don't have that problem. It does spin as expected to do. I do not use Avast on any of my x32 xp boxes and do not have vista x32. So cannot check this out for you. I also do not use all of Outpost firewall pro's plugins though, just attack detection and dns cache. May want to start with shutting down plugins in Outpost to see if its a plugin issue. Then again, I may be entirely off. |

the spinning aball just identifies that avast is scanning. If its going all the time, you may be setting it for excessive scanning which could lead to problems. Both avast and op have self protect and exclude (locations or executables). If you set these up with some care, op will not interfere with avast, and the ball will only be spinning as you expect it to. Also, try using autolearn mode for op and run through the avast screens. This will create application rules for the numerous, but good avast files. Also, if a quick or full scan is running, the ball spins for the duration of the scan. But non-spinning is in no way a bad thing. |

It's been that way for years. I beta tested Outpost for years and had trouble from day 1 when I went to Avast. Used to have several random blue screens and memory dumps that stopped by uninstalling one or the other. I am still listed as a tester but have not had Outpost on a system for about a year. I like Outpost but it's getting huge and bloated like many apps have done over the years. |

I recommend running resident as normal and everything else at high. Keeps the CPU impact low with good protection. I've set up many PCs this way.
As for firewall, don't forget that the web scanner uses a proxy on port 12080... |

I agree with HA Nut. I run mine all on high except resident. I also make sure to check for updates. Might also install AnitMalware along with Avast. Or something to catch web-based intrusion/malware. Avast Free doesn't catch this*. I've not verified the Pro version, but its supposed to do more (Why not buy it). * I state this as I recommended Avast to some hard hit Symantec users and they got the AntiSpyware2008 hit from a web page, not email or attachment. Thanks to the Security forum and cleanup folks for their guidance and patience to help clean up that scum! |

I'd leave it all on. The Outlook module only runs when Avast sees Outlook running. So if there is any possibility that Outlook may be used at some point, I'd leave it switched on. (eg., my tray icon shows 7 providers, 6 running. Outlook is not running so the provider isn't either.) |

Ha, how can you have that many 7 providers? I only have 4 |

I have six of the seven providers running and the only reason i have six is because i don't use Outlook/Exchange.

Yep, if you install everything (default) then you'll have 7 running if you use Outlook. |
