Re: ADSL with no voice service?

Hi, I relocated from Perth to N.I. 4 years ago. I went with O2 Pay as you go mobile. I then signed up with O2 BB. The best I have come across. A Heads up, only go for LLU. A couple of ISPs to steer clear of Tiscali and BT.
Take a look at Thinkbroadband.(forum) it's got all the ISPs in UK.

Essentially there are 'three' options

1. ADSL You'll need a BT land line as we call them here into your abode. Off the back of that, you can 'piggy back' to Any ISP who offers services you desire. You pay BT a monthly rental (includes POTS voice) and the ISP
2. Cable - only one provider - Virgin Media (luv em h8 em) look in the street for a little square cover - this and there post code service will let you know if it's an option. You can then select the services you want. No need for a BT land line etc.
3. This is the tough one. You get a BT land line (as 1 above) but this time, you select an ISP for a bundle of services and you pay them for everything.

Hi,

I've recently relocated to the UK from Australia. The situation as I understood it in Australia was that you could get LLU broadband (called ULL in Oz. Because we're upside down, everything is reversed ) with no voice service (ie completely unbundled, not just the data component). The catch was, you needed an existing line (and phone number) with Telstra (the incumbent national telco) to unbundle. So what I was told by an ISP in Australia was that when I moved into an apartment I needed to sign up for a Telstra account, then sign up for LLU broadband, then cancel the Telstra account.

So, my question is, what is the situation here? Is it possible to get fully unbundled LLU (ie no voice), and if so, how does one go about doing it? I have no need whatsoever for a local loop voice service when VOIP and mobile phone are more than sufficient, so I don't see why I should pay BT for something I will never use. I appreciate though that someone, somewhere along the line needs to pay rental on the local loop. In Australia I *believe* this is handled by the LLU ISP paying Telstra a flat rate - which Telstra have been battling the government regulator over.

Please forgive any factual errors I've made, I'm by no means an expert on the myriad technical and regulatory issues involved in LLU. Feel free to correct me on anything.

Cheers!
