Columbus, OH | Must be a nice kick in the balls considering these terrestrial stations are paying out the ass in fees to these clowns just to stay on the air. This isn't even considering the fees they have to pay to run a simulcast web stream.
Then you have the highway robbery that is internet radio license fees....

RIAA Official laments Climate Change; blames climate change for declining Music Sales
"Climate change is out of control;" stated a RIAA spokeshole today in Washington, D.C. "We need legislation to address the competitive disadvantage we face vs. Weather. Weather has great control over our business model. We feel it's impact has been exaggerated by climate change, and we feel it's only fair we receive adequate compensation from taxpayers to "Level the playing field" between our members and the Weather."
The RIAA member went on to further warn if compensation wasn't forthcoming, several dozen lawyers may be out of a job. "A national tragedy and disgrace."

It's simple.. the radio stations profit from the broadcasting of the music.. they're not non-profit organizations, after all. In this case, I agree with them paying for the music.. or anyone that profits off the work of others. |

But the RIAA and other related parties are putting the screws to them in terms of the ever increasing fees they pay. And they (RIAA) figure that it's either give in and pay up or go off the air permanently. Guess what road the broadcasters take? And often they do it by the skin of their teeth and have to cut costs in the process just to break even. We just had a massive layoff around here of a number of REAL on air personalities from a number of stations in the area. Ones that have actually made the voice of their respected stations.
And don't even get me started on internet radio. All you have to do is do a search of this very site for related news stories and you have all the facts you want about the whole corruption that is the RIAA and the accompanied labels that have been raising rates to the point of even putting the most lucrative stations out of business. Let alone the little guy who's usually focused more on artist promotion and word of mouth than anything else and probably has listeners that actually LISTEN for the music.
Yeah, I'm not saying they shouldn't get paid. But this argument has been beaten to death and back on the different points. If anything I'd rather have the checks from the stations go directly to the artists they play or at least the labels next up the ladder. Not the extortionists at the RIAA.
But on the topic at han: With all this being said, it truly is a nice hit below the belt being claimed of piracy after you have paid them an arm and a leg for what amounts to only permission to play their music under their specific circumstances.

Guess what will be next.. Broadcast TV is a form of Piracy.
I think they need to shut up and think before they spout off FUD to everyone.
I love what their business model is.. "Sure, pay us so you can play our music over your airwaves. But, come next week, we'll charge you for piracy and deny everything."
