[VoIPo] Bad audio calling out, calling back seems to fix it...

I am going to submit a ticket this AM, but I noticed something that cropped up yesterday morning. My wife was home with my daughter yesterday, and she called from the house to the office. When I picked up, it sounded almost like an old cordless phone that was just on the edge of it's range. The voice was barely audible and there was alot of noise, almost like static. Calling back fixed it.

I had it crop on me when I got home. I called my sister and she heard the same thing. I tried calling back twice, got a fast busy. After that it went through. It's not something I had experience with voip before, maybe a bad route? This occured on two different phones to two different states.

Thoughts?

Are you shooting for a new post every day ?

Sounds a lot like your ISP was having issues.

So the breakage is on the non-VOIPo phone? How is it(the audio) on the VOIPo phone? I had a similar problem last week, it was the upload, my ISP was working on some stuff, when they were done working and the upload was back to normal the bad audio went away.

On the calling side it was ok, just the receiver of the call would hear the noise.

But would an ISP issue cause a static sound? That is a bit different than normal ISP stuff.

It did for my phones, also breaking audio. but from the looks of it so as much as you had. And my voice was as loud as normal, for the person I was talking to.

This could maybe also be the issue tim mentioned awhile back about level3 media gateways? Are you registered to sip? This was one reason I switched to central01... If you are not on sip, never mind

Ooof, I am on the phone with my wife, it looks like the PAP2 lost registration again.
How long should it take to try to re-register again?

It definitely sounds like there could be connectivity issues between you our node that you're on.

The main reason I say that is that you mentioned you had fast busies twice when calling out once. Once on our network, we use the famous "Goodbye" instead of fast busy to signal an error connecting, so if you got a fast busy it's unlikely it was hitting us.

I went ahead and moved you to one of our new nodes (Central01) which is in our new datacenter. You may have a better connection to it.

You should pick this up automatically within the next few hours, but could reboot to get it immediately.

Later if you want to see what you have the "cleanest" connection to, here are some options:

central02.voipwelcome.com
central01.voipwelcome.com
east01.voipwelcome.com

Since you're in CT, East may be a good option as well (Washington DC). Let me know if you want to go on it.

Thanks Tim. I am going to ask the wife to go upstairs and reboot it for me when she has a chance. Luckily she is working from home today.

Another thing you may want to do just for good measure is forward ports 5060, 5061, 5079 (SIP Ports) and 35000-65000 (Audio Ports) to the PAP2.

I can do that. Tomato firmware has been great so far and I have not had to forward anything, but it can't hurt.

Since the PAP2 lost registration and the wife has not reset it yet, how long would it take to register on it's own?

See that's the thing. It would re-register within about a minute unless it couldn't connect to us at all.

Still no reports of any registration issues with PAP2s at all either.

So it not connecting is another reason it sounds like there's definitely some kind of connection issue between you and our network. Hopefully using the another node that will likely take a different network path will resolve that for you.

Got it. She is on a conference call and is on Fidelity's VPN etc so right now she can't mess with it.

I posted this in the Metrocast cable forum to see if there was anything going on in my area. They did some work about a month ago in our area that really cleaned things up a bunch.

Sounds good. Maybe tonight when home, compare the traceroutes of the addresses listed to see which is "cleanest" for you. Don't worry so much about pingtime, look for the cleanest route.

Tim....

I haven't had the first problem with either my SPA2102 or with your PAP2Ts.
I have been on sip and it works perfectly. Since you posted about the east01, would there be any decided advantage for me to switch to it, or with the exception of maybe ping times, are all the servers mirrored?

I gather that you're not having an issue with ViaTalk, so could it be possible that you are in possesion of a defective PAP2T?

I realize that PAP2s in general are reliable, but the odds seemed to have been stacked against you from the beginning.

Burris,

I just checked out the central01 (which I have been using) & east01 traceroutes and the east01 server is definitely cleaner for me.

I ported my number from VT so I can't say if I am. I guess I could always try a pay as you go provider on another adapter and give it a try for comparison.
