The car that I have for selling is mine , it is personal property and I am going to sell it because I was

promoted to my work and in the same time they gave me a new car for work and moving for my needs. In conclusion, I don't need two

good cars for the moment and I decided, after a discussion with my husband (sometimes is very difficult to be persuasive, you know

what I mean) about selling my car, because it is sensles to keep the car only to occupy the garage.
The final price that I want for this car is $ 2,930 , so let me know if you are interested so i can provide more details.

As for payment : I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them .According with eBay you have 5 days
from the time you receive the car to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not, in this time ebay will escrow the money
to their own account.You will probably think that this is little risky , and I understand your concern ,I thinked like this when I

did deals in the past.
But after I give it a try I never got problems and i was sure that the method was the safest, fastest and fairest method to deal
over internet .I also understand that you can't trust in some one or a some method of transaction until you make one or 2 deals. I
put myself in your place and by the situation that you receive the merchandise before the seller receive the money is an excellent
method that assures your money( the buyers money).

The reason i want to make it this way is that i just relocated in Manhattan,New York ,and i have the car here with me ready to be

shipped.

So here is how it will work:

1.First of all I will need the following details from you:

- Full Name
- Full Shipping Address

2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. The invoice will send you the details on how to make a
refundable payment.
4. eBay will contact me and I will ship the car to you. After you receive the car you will have 5 days to test, verify and do
whatever you need to the car.
5. If you will decide that you will not buy the car, eBay will refund the money and I will have the shipping company come pick up
my car.

Have A Great Day.
Jessica

I have found the listing on craigslist multiple times in states that aren't even close to new york, and I'm almost 100% sure it's a scam so watch out. It use the same general things, eBay motors, car descriptions, shipping the car, but an admittedly more believable story so watch out. Just though I would post the email address and "story" that "she" gave me so that one of these immoral, and terrible people do not steal hard earned money from someone, especially a young person like me who, worked during high school to earn their money through minimum wage, which would be terrible.

anon : I saw this forum and I couldn't resist posting, since I was so close to getting caught up in this scam. I came across three different scams involving cars within a week - three!

Two of them used the exact same format. Which makes me think there must a number of formats scammers use, but these two happened to use the same one. Those two were the 'single woman who just got a job as a dealer on a cruise ship' format. The third one was 'recently divorced woman who is moving closer to parents and therefore must sell the car'.

Like I said, I wanted to put my two cents in, so here it goes: if the ad you see shows the car in a different area then what the seller tells you in their email, that should be the first and last sign you need.

I know there are other signs too, but some of those could be mere coincidence. But there is no excuse for the ad showing the car on one side of the world, while the seller tells you in their email that it is on the other side.

That happened to me all three times, and by the third time, I definitely realized the importance of location. Shouldn't they keep their story straight? But they can't, because that's not even their ad. They find a random ad on the internet and try to base their story around it. But the problem is, they can't easily get around the location difference. So they throw the whole 'it's ready to be shipped at a warehouse in [insert random area here]' spiel. And do we ever bother asking why the location changed from the original ad? I know I didn't. But I should have.

Anyway, I just hope no one falls prey to this scam. When something is too good to be true, it probably is. Word to the wise

anon : I think I may be involved in this scam as well but I am in the process of making the decision to buy it or not. Can you please take a look at these emails and the information to help me out.

Ok, the first thing that made me think this deal is too good to be true is:

-Listed on Craigslist
-2004 Nissan 350z for $4300 with only 37,000 miles on it. (wow?)
-I sent an email to the person asking the standard questions about if it had been sold yet, any accidents, VIN#, etc?
-The person replies in an email... 2 MINUTES LATER!
Here is that email:

Hello there,
I'm writing you regarding my 2004 Nissan 350 Z.
The car it's in perfect condition. Paint and everything else is flawless.
The car has a clear title and it has only 37,200 miles on it.
The price is not negotiable, if you are interested in buying it, the price is $4,300. I sell the car at this price because I cannot enjoy it due to my job (I work as a casino dealer on a cruise ship) and I'm a single woman and I have nobody close who can use it.
All documents, including owner's manual, clear title and a bill of sale on your name will be provided along with the car. Also about payment and shipping I will use only eBay Purchase Protection so we can both be protected. I am looking forward to hear from you.

Thank you!

Ok, first of all, all these scams seem to have the same message that they are "out of town" and they can have the car shipped via a friend or someone. Second, I also asked other questions like "does the ac work?" "how many owners", etc. and none of these questions were answered directly. The email seemed to be a copy/pasted drawn up letter.

So I replied to the email again - asking for the VIN # so I could research the car history. This was the reply:

Hello,

Sorry for my late reply. I have to tell you that I'm currently at work.. As I already told you, I work as a dealer on a cruise ship and for this reason I chose to sell my car over the internet. The car it's in Chagrin Falls, Ohio at the shipping company, it's already packed and waiting to be shipped anywhere.. I have a friend there at DAS who will manage me a low price shipping and I assumed that it's from me to pay for shipping it. You will receive all the documents of the car (owner's manuals, keys, clear title, bill of sale) in order to register it under your name.
If you are interested to purchase the car, I have done some researching and the best way to close the deal is through eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program. The transaction fits the Vehicle Protection plan and will be covered by eBay. Vehicle Purchase Protection reimburses buyers who are involved in a vehicle transaction through their program. The program provides reimbursement for all the situations that can appear in a transaction. The money will be sent to an eBay agent. After the payment is confirmed and secured by eBay I will start the shipping. The car will be in front at your door in max 3 days. From the moment you receive the car you have a 5 days inspection period. After the 5 days you have to decide if you want to keep the car or not. If you'll keep it, the payment will be released to me. In case you will not like the car and decide not to keep it, you will have to ship it back and you will be fully refunded.
If you agree I will need your full name and complete shipping address, your phone#.

Thank you!
P.S. The VIN # is .....(deleted it for privacy issues in this forum, not sure if i need to, but just in case)

I did a vehicle history report of the car and it is in fact the correct car, correct mileage as stated, and has a clean history. However, why did I find this car listed on Phoenix, Arizona search of used cars when the car is in Ohio and she works on a cruise ship?

There has been more emails back and forth, but basically a lot of red flags are going up in my head about this being a legit deal.

-Email response in only 2 minutes in what sounds like a copy/pasted response to any emails sent to that email.
-Car is way underpriced for the type of car and mileage
-Talked with ebay representative online and she confirmed that they DO NOT hold onto money between buyer and seller as the buyer approves or disapproves of the car that is purchased.

FINAL NOTE: As I finally finished this long post, I went back to the listing on craigslist and noticed that the car listing has been flagged for removal. I figured I would still post this so that if anyone gets contacted by this person they will avoid it. The name of person was Sabrina Bullock.

anon : This time it is a Honda Odyssey. I got my payment instructions. I did a quick google search as the deal looked too good to be true. First link which connected to this forum gave me confirmation about the con artist. Thanks to this forum. For the benefit of others I am posting the emails from the scammer.

This con artist registered his eBay look alike domain just 4 days (08-06-2009) before getting me ready to send him money. Pretty slick..ha..
Here are the emails in the order I received.

This sender is DomainKeys verified
"Jason Peck, USAF Tech. Sgt."

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in my car.This is a 2005 Honda Odyssey EX, the Perfect family car, seats 8 comfortably, safe, comfortable, stylish and fun. The most practical and comfortable car on the road. This vehicle is fully loaded including 2 x DVD players w/ headphones, GPS, 6 CD changer, Back up video, rear sensors, inverter to plug in std AC games or computer, Satellite Radio, leather seats with heat, Ice cold AC, New tires, upgraded sound system, very clean interior, well maintained with all scheduled maintenance competed,clean title.

Mileage 67,825,VIN#: 5FNRL38755B051164.

Here you can find more pictures of the car:»s852.photobucket.com/albums/ab83···odyssey/
(if the above link does not work copy and paste it into a new web browser window).

The car has been well taken care of, always kept in the garage.Flawless exterior/interior condition,no scratches and no dents.It has never been involved in an accident.The engine starts and drives like new and the paint looks great.It comes with US clear title which will be signed and notorized in the buyer's name.Have all keys and manuals.

I'm an US Air Force Sgt. currently stationed in the United Kingdom.The car is here with me. It was bought in the US and shipped to Europe, but it was never permanently registered here, the car is still registered in the US.The car is for sale locally as well, but there are slim chances of this to happen. In order to be able to register this car here in the UK the buyer would have to pay very high import/custom taxes that will double the price. So I decided to sell the car back in the US.

The price is $4,900.00 including shipping from the UK to the US and delivery to your home address.

So if you decide to buy this car or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible.

Thank you
Jason Peck, USAF Tech. Sgt.

This sender is DomainKeys verified
"Jason Peck, USAF Tech. Sgt."

Hi,

I will have the car shipped from UK by an US Air Force cargo plane so there won't be any additional shipping costs. Also I will arrange for a truck to transport the car to your home address or, if you like, you can pick it up from the nearest airport in your area. The shipping will take 6-8 days, depending on your location.Shipping will be door to door,to your home address,somebody must be home when the car arrives to sign for the reception.The car will arrive with all the papers and documents required for registration and the keys. The clear title and the bill of sale will be already signed by me.

The payment will be done through eBay.You will send the money to eBay and as soon as the payment is confirmed they will notify me to proceed with the shipping. I will ship the car, you will receive it and you will have 5 days for inspection, both the car and the paperwork and the option to accept or reject the car.The inspection time period will begin as soon as you sign for receiving the car at your requested address.During all this time eBay will hold the money into a trust account.So, this is not a blind transaction,you can see the car before decided to buy it.If you are satisfied with the car and decide to keep it you inform eBay about this and they will release the money to me. If the car is not as advertised and decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back the car will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for the both of us.Please take into consideration that I will get paid only after you receive the car and make sure everything is as agreed.

If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name and the address where you want the car to be delivered to and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.

I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible.

Thank you

This sender is DomainKeys verified
"Jason Peck, USAF Tech.
anon : Greetings all,

It looks like someone from this racquet is at it again. I was searching AUTO TRADER for a Mercedes and found a good deal. Not a fabulous deal but just enough to get me interested. I emailed "Sean Nelson" about the car and this is the reply I received.....

"Hello,
Thank you for being interested in my MB CLK 550!
I want to mention that it is still for sale and I'm the first owner (non smoker)
The car has been meticulously maintained by myself and Mercedes-Benz Dealership so its in excellent condition and ready for a new owner!
Further I can say that it has only 39,066 miles, it runs & drives great, its very reliable and it hasn't been involved in accidents, even more it has no scratches, flaws or any kind of damage!
The car has been fully paid off so is not under bank liabilities and it will come with a clear title and transferable warranty.
The only reason I'm selling it is because my wife and I just had a new baby and because US Air Force notified me that I'm moving to Germany in four days from now.
As you can see the car is priced to sell quickly and the price that I'm asking for it is $20,200 (negotiable)
If you want to buy it I'm going to ship it directly to your home address at no costs on your side.
Anyway, if you're still interested in buying it please reply to this e-mail so we can make the deal.

Thanks!
Sean"

I replied stating I needed the VIN and a time and place to meet in order to evaluate the car in person and this is the response I received.....

"Hello,

The VIN is WDBTJ72J77F217494
I'm sorry but I'm not able to meet you these days because of my schedule but we can still make the deal thru eBay.
I'm affiliated at their Vehicle Purchase Protection Program and because I'm very busy I'm going to let them help me sell the car.
At this moment the car is located in New York sealed along with the proper documents (title, maintenance records, bill of sale, owners manual) at a storage facility, ready to be shipped.
Here are the details on how the deal will work:
- First of all, I need your information: name, shipping address and home/cell phone #
- After I receive your info I'll forward it to eBay, they will process our info and initiate the transaction.
- We will receive an invoice, your invoice will notify you how to make a refundable payment and the transfer will be done via bank to bank transfer.
Our transaction will be guaranteed by eBay and supervised by one of their representatives until its finished.
- If you agree with eBay VPP terms and decide to complete the payment, they will validate it and will contact me to authorize shipping.
Have a notion that shipping is already paid because I already took care of this on my costs.
- After you receive the car, you'll have a 5 days inspection period while you can test drive and verify the car, you can even take it to an independent mechanic for inspection.
If you like it and decide to keep it, the car will be registered on your name with properly executed title and you'll have to notify eBay and let them know that the car is as I described and that I can be paid.
If you decide that you don't want to keep the car, which I doubt, eBay will completely refund you within 3 days and I'll have to return the car on my costs.

I apologize if it seems like I'm pushing on the deal but time pressures me! Hope you understand why I'm conducting the deal in this manner and if you're fine with the terms please reply with the requested info so I can initiate the deal thru eBay.

Thank you for your time!
Sean"

Needless to say......this car isn't right for me, but others should be warned.
anon : This was from a Land Rover posted on Auto Trader

From: Alan Martins [mailto:alanmartins46@gmail.com]
Sent: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 5:13 PM
To: Robert Hertling
Subject: Re: Range Rover Sport for sale

Hi,

To give you a pertinent explanation of the under market price all I can say is that I'm ruined.... this crisis ate me alive and I've almost lost my business. I desperately need some money to save my business so I need to sell my car. Two days ago I've put myself on a plane to Goteborg, Sweden because I need to renegotiate a contract here. Because of this I've already arranged the shipping anywhere in the US and it is included in the price. It would be hard to reach each other on the phone due to the time difference. Anyway, here is my number: +46313607468. Given the nature of this transaction please note that my sale terms are final and non-negotiable.
The transaction will be made through eBay for the safety of both of us. In order to do this we will have to follow a few easy steps:

- I start the transaction through eBay;
- you give me your shipping address so I can arrange the shipping;
- they send you an invoice with the payment details;
- you send the money to eBay Motors Payment Department;
- I will start the shipping;
- you receive the vehicle and inspect it;
- you accept the vehicle and eBay pays me.

eBay Motors will hold the money until the car and the the clean title are delivered to you. You will have 5 days for inspection from the moment you receive the car. If the car is not like described, you will have to ship it back on my expense and eBay will give you a full refund. This way, you will be able to inspect the vehicle before committing to buy it and I know that you have the money and you are serious about buying it. I've left all the car's documents in the glovebox and you'll receive them along with the car. This includes the title, service records, original manuals and a bill of sale. The title and the bill of sale are signed by me, all you have to do is to put your name on them.

In order to move forward I will need your full name and shipping address.
eBay will get in touch with you with further details and instructions.
Looking forward to hear from you!

Alan

scelli :
said by jfhdk :

Is there anyone I could report him to, or is he pretty anonymous being on gmail?
I wonder...

There are others on this forum far more experienced who might give you an answer to that question. If you're asking me because of what I mentioned regarding his e-mail address, then you probably should understand that nothing about this bozo is likely real. I mean he pawns himself off a member of the military (as do many others who utilize the exact same spiel in their come-on) by using military ranks such as Sergeant or Lieutenant. However, these people simply don't talk like someone who is/was actually in the military and continually make the same mistakes that stand out like the proverbial sore thumb to those of us with genuine military backgrounds.

For example: this absolute nonsense about being assigned to a specific country "to improve military relations" is utter bunk. Even if there was even a grain of truth to the claim, such liaison assignments wouldn't be open to the lower ranks of Sergeant or Lieutenant except in rare circumstances and then only as aide-de-camps to a higher ranking individual. It just doesn't work like that and is a sure indication of a scam of one sort or another. Another example that doesn't jive is the constant harping about having the car shipped by something the scammer refers to as "US Air Military Cargo". I'd like to have a face-to-face meeting with our would-be philanderer and have him explain just how he plans on accomplishing such a feat using military aircraft. There are ways a service member can ship what is commonly called in the military a POV (privately owned vehicle) but it just ain't as easy as this bozo describes and there is a lot involved.

Anyway, didn't mean to write a massive response to your inquiry. It's just that I've been on these boards a long, long time and continually see this same old tired attempt by scammers over and over again. Anytime you see this stuff, run for the hills. It's 100% phony.

--
The maximum effective range of an excuse is ZERO meters!

anon : Below is the quote on responding to a craiglist ad for CBR600 motorcycle.
===========Quote===========(1st Email from scammer)
Hello and sorry for the late reply. Hope I'm not too late and you didn't already purchased another bike.I saw you are interested in my 2008 Honda CBR 600cc.Here are some details regarding the bike:it has 780 miles( it's like new ) - i gotta sell it fast because of my job.It's rust free, no scratch and hasn't been involved in any accident( never been laid down either).No water / flood or storm damage.This is one of the best bikes I have owned so far.I have the clear title in my hand.I want this transaction to be smooth and I don't have much time at my disposal to engage in endless discussions. I believe $3,800 is more than a fair price for this bike.Let me know if you are interested. Thank you,Lt. William Cooper P.S. Here are some pictures with the bike: »s640.photobucket.com/albums/uu12···acbr600/
===================un-quote============
my response............

Hi,

I almost have a deal in hand, but certainly that can wait.
Please let me know when and where can I see the bike.

Thankyou.
Cheers xyz
==================Quote========(2nd Email from scammer)
The bike is at MacDill AFB, Tampa Bay, FL, where I am currently stationed, until May 14th, when I will be deployed to Iraq (I'm a US AirForce Lieutenant). Shipping won't be a problem for me,being a military I have access to some special facilities. I will take care of that, with no costs on your end.It will come with all the necessary papers (clear title, bill of sale, warranty documents, user’s manual,insurance). This is a large amount and I would like to conduct the deal using an authorized third party like Ebay using their Purchase Protection Program, so this should eliminate any trust issues. They will keep a deposit until the purchase is final, and you test and accept the bike. If you will not get the bike as described, and also a clean title you will receive your money back.To be able to use this program you need to qualify. I have been approved 3 years ago and I was very satisfied. So, if you are interested in buying my bike just let me know your name, shipping address and a phone number where I can reach you if necessary and I will forward these to eBay's protection program and wait for the approval.
Thank you,Lt. William Cooper

====================un-quote==============
my response.............

Hi, Let me know your phone and street address where I can meet you and see the bike. And we can finalize the deal.
mikeo : Did that get posted for everyone to see. Or was that sent to you.. sorry I am new to this. How do I post it for all/can you forward that back to me. Thanks. And good luck with you car purchases in the future.

.. Ill leave that cause I think its kinda funny.. sorry all im a noob at this .. ok .. lets try this again.

So a similar situation happened to me within the last two days.. I always check these forum when I think I'm being scammed so I wanted to share this one.

I saw an add on carigslist for a motorcycle. Look like a too good to be true deal, but responded. Here is the response:

Hello and sorry for the late reply. Hope I'm not too late and you didn't already purchased another bike.
I saw you are interested in my 2008 Honda CBR 600cc. The bike has 780 miles( it's like new ) - i gotta sell it fast because of my job. Rust free, no scratch and hasn't been involved in any accident( never been laid down ).This is one of the best bikes I have owned so far. The bike has a CLEAN title.I want this transaction to be smooth and I don't have much time at my disposal to waste with endless discussions. I believe $3,800 is more than a fair price. Let me know if you wanna buy it.

Thank you,

Lt. Paul Jackson

P.S. More pictures here:
»s638.photobucket.com/albums/uu10···onda600/

First thing that tipped me off to it being a scam was immediately after I recieved a response I researched craigslist for the posting and it was gone. In the email, he answered all but one of my questions, which I found odd. Also, was in a rush to sell, which was another bad sign. Giving the benefit of the doubt, people have their reasons some times, I responded back. Told him I would like the VIN number and would like to see the bike, test drive it, and if everything checked out we would make the exchange that day. His response:

The bike is at MacDill AFB, Tampa Bay, FL, where I am currently stationed, until April 19th, when I will be deployed to Iraq (I'm a US AirForce Lieutenant). This is why I must sell it before that date. Shipping won't be a problem for me,being a military I have access to some special facilities. I will take care of that, with no costs on your end. So, if you are interested in buying my bike just let me know your name and shipping address.
I will forward these to eBay's protection program and wait for the approval.
You can reach me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx or you can leave me your phone # as well.

Thank you,
Lt. Paul Jackson

you can see the vin number in the pictures I uploaded

It is obvious now that it is a scam. This was also posted in a philadelphia craigslist posting. :) So what should I do now? I am kinda tempted to response and see what the next stage of the scam would be. What do you think?

anon : My husband found this ad on craigslist and responded then recieved this email below

Lt. Steve Hoinski to me
show details Mar 8 (2 days ago) Reply

Hello,
You have to know that the 2005 Audi A4 1.8T ULTRA SPORT PKG I am selling is 100% working and great looking, no flaws or dents, no scratches or any kind of damage. The title is clear. It has 64.000 miles. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line.
Here are the pics of the car :
»s619.photobucket.com/albums/tt27···vehaudi/
(if the above link does not work copy and paste it into a new web browser window)
As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay's Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and inspect it (for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you won`t be satisfied with the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.
I am located in Madrid,Spain and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between our country and Spain. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because In order to be able to register this car here, I would have to pay very high import/custom taxes. My final price on it is $ 2950. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 4 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Thank you and have a nice day,
Lt.
